I travel constantly (12 months per year!), so I can give you a few tips. One is take far less than you think you need (I can travel the world full time with just a Daypack). I also carry a substantial library on my kindle and I also use my smartphone to read. Also, obviously you'll take photos but try to keep a basic handwritten diary. I've got them going back decades. Finally, lock the people you meet and the places you visit as a memory. Enjoy every minute, practice mindfulness and you'll realise just how cool the world is. Enjoy your travels; if you get the bug, you're hooked for life! P.S. the are HUGE opportunities for performing when travelling; go for it.

@JG:
Thanks very much for the post and the travel tips. Usually when I travelled back to China, I would bring bunch of gifts from US for my family and friends and I would stay at home for the whole vacation. However I'm in a different mood this time, so I decided to travel to different places and cut down the weight of my luggage. I spent some time in Shanghai and cities around. I found it's really really cool and free to travel alone, and I've already fallen in love with it. Next, I'm planning to travel to Hainan island and see the most Southern place of China. The thing I'm most excited and anticipated is riding the water jet all day long there. I ran across a small magic store in a city near Shanghai. The store owner showed me a simple trick using glide and some sponge ball tricks. I showed him a selected card at called number trick and fooled him, and I purchased a deck of cards to show my support for the store. |

I've really enjoyed this thread from two angles. First, it's been interesting to read the various and overlapping responses, and has reminded me of at least one book I meant to look for. Second, I've had this same dilemma. The last time I went on a vacation I was in the middle of re-working some routines that were in a book, but the book was too large to travel with, so I took some photos of the relevant pages with my iPad. A bit kludgey, but it sufficed. A couple of people mentioned eBooks, of which I have very few, but that got me to thinking ... then Greig made this comment,

Pretty cool. And I have a Kindle! So the question I have for Greig (or anyone else that might have done this) is did you use the "convert" feature to convert the PDFs to Kindle, or are you reading them as PDFs? It seems that if the latter then they could be difficult to read if small, but I wonder how well the conversion is done. I've had mixed results converting PDFs. Thanks,
