Hi, I'm a grandpa in Oregon with an interest in Mentalism. I grew up on Maui and Kauai in Hawaii and was hypnotized on each island by Ormond McGill, as well as having him to our house a guest after his show on Kauai. I'm enjoying Magic Café and posting where appropriate.

The last time I saw Ormond McGill, I took him to dinner. We had a most delightful evening in San Francisco. I wished that it had lasted until dawn!. You and I share an acquaintance of a gentleman, and a fine magician.
Welcome to our motley crew!

My late father, Walter Haas, who grew up in Burlingame, San Mateo and San Bruno, was a member of an amateur magic club in the Bay Area in the 20s and 30s. He named me Gordon after a fellow member of the club, Gordon Cinnamond, who was about 85% deaf. My dad grew up to be a veterinarian with a big booming voice as a result. Cinnamond became a teacher, school principal and superintendent of a school district in the Marysville area.
He once told me about going with the club to see a magician (possibly Harry Blackstone, Sr.)appearing in San Francisco. The opening effect featured 2 trunks, one on stage, one suspended above the audience. A female assistant was placed in the trunk on stage, a blank shot pistol fired at it and the trunk opened to reveal she had vanished. Immediately, the other trunk slid down a cable to the far side of the stage and was quickly opened to reveal the vanished woman inside. He said it was so far from the first trunk and so fast, that he and his club friends could not figure out how it could have been done. After the show, the club got to meet the magician and got a backstage tour where they saw the twin sisters from the trunks. My dad was also an outstanding shell collector, as was McGill, and it was seashells that brought him to our house that evening. Dad also was one of the first donor to the James Randi Million Dollar Challenge. |

I'm mostly interested in Mentalism and Mathematical Magic. I am a grandpa myself and want to help my granddaughters develop a little skill and a healthy dose of skepticism.
