So I am working on a Star Wars-themed birthday party show
Certainly not a new concept, by any stretch, but as yet, I haven't found any really great ideas. With the exception of a gorgeous light saber/sword cabinet- most of what I've found has been pretty standard KIDS shows with some references to SW in the latter, but no real full on theming. So far, ideas that I've come up with (and to give an idea of the types of other ideas I am looking for) includes: * a zombie routine, but with a miniature Death Star replica * customizing one of my Cups & Balls sets to have all the cups painted to look like R2-D2 and using little crocheted BB-8s as the balls (or perhaps simplifying to just a Chop Cup with the same alteration Trying to decide what sponge balls could be. Maybe a physical representation of the mysterious Midichlorians... or maybe just using sponge rocks instead and calling them asteroids. They make really nice, glowing light saber replicas that are just about the size of a standard wand too... so there's a pretty obvious idea... Anyone else do an SW themed show? Thoughts/ideas that you're willing to share? |

Back in 1980, I revised the UF Grant "Farmer and the Witch" Illusion with Star Wars Characters for use with my (then) newly formed Wiz Kids group. In 2010 I published it as "Star Warts" for The Magic Nook in my Kid Show Magic section. In 2013, I added some new thoughts and "improvements" in case the Star Wars theme ever ran out of steam and/or you wanted to take the ideas and develop new themes of your own (Christmas Characters, etc.).
The plot: Kids from the audience are dressed up in costumes and masks to re-enact a scene from the popular movie, Star Wars. Even the magician, who plays the part of Dark Vapor, and one of the parents gets into the act. At the end, everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY is found to have changed costumes and no one knows how it happened! Backstage assistant required. The main change from the old Farmer and the Witch is the addition of the performer and a parent (tall people) mixed in with the short people (kids), in which there is a growth and a shrinkage effect added to the mix-ups. To my surprise, the Star Wars theme still works after all these years, although you might want to substitute some of the new characters to bring it up to date for the newest generation of Star Wars fans.

When someone has a theme party, I personally don't believe that everything you do has to reflect that theme. One or two effects should more than suffice.
I know this idea may sound really stupid, but something as simple as a Miser's Dream routine and dropping the coins into a Dark Vader hard plastic helmet may be a huge hit with this crowd. Whatever you wind up doing, I think a little Star Wars music playing in the background will help sell it. Gerry |

Jim- Is that the same Farmer & Witch routine published in the Mark Wilson course forever ago?
That's actually a great idea! And Gerry- Miser's Dream using a Vader Mask Halloween candy bucket is also a great idea! I'm almost scared of posting my idea for my "magic Jedi" name for fear of it getting nicked, but it's probably more tickling to me than any of the effects/mods to effects that I've come up with or come across. Ha. |

Red sponge balls look a little bit like laser beam blasts to me. You could make up a patter about how the best jedi don't merely knock laser beam blasts aside-- they make them turn solid and they catch them in their bare hands.
You could introduce some cane magic by claiming that the canes are light saber blades without the handles. Appearing or disappearing canes are the lightsaber switching off and on. And of course if you switch from the dark side to the light side, your lightsaber blade changes color... Actually, the idea of lightsaber blades changing color could be a lead in for ANY color-changing routine -- silks, candles, etc. Apparently there's a whole elaborate symbolism for various lightsaber colors: http://epicstream.com/features/Star-Wars......hey-Mean |

Ooh, coincidentally, I just came across this. It's more close-up focused, but it might give you some ideas:

Those are actually really cool, jacobsw.
That reminds me. I was thinking of transforming a Han Solo doll (one of the Barbie-sized ones) into a block of Han in carbonate (I actually have a perfect Frozen Han popcorn container from SW Weekends at Disney Hollywood Studios two years ago that is just the right size and obviously a perfect facsimile) and then back again. Wondering the best prop to achieve that kind of transformation since the before and after are both on the odd side, size and shape-wise. |

I just did a star wars themed bday party and I didn't cater any magic to be more star wars like. just my regular set. but when one of the boys was acting up I looked him in the eyes and said, "I am your father". huge reaction and pretty much made up for the lack of star wars themed magic lol.

"Star Wars" is trademarked. IIRC, even before Disney acquired "Star Wars," Nick Trost had to remove a "Star Wars" packet trick that he marketed because TPTB found out about it.
And now that the Disney folks own the "Star Wars" franchise, it's even riskier. -----quote from snopes.com----- Daycare Center Murals Claim:  Disney forced the removal of murals featuring their cartoon figures from the walls of three Florida day care centers. Status:  True. Origins:  When Disney demanded that the unauthorized 5-foot-high painted figures of Disney characters on the walls of Very Important Babies Daycare, Good Godmother Daycare, and Temple Messianique (all in Hallandale, Florida) be removed for valid business reasons: infringements must be fought in order to keep trademarks intact; other Disney character licensees would have grounds to object if Disney provided inexpensive (or free) licenses to the centers (which are, after all, profit-making enterprises); and the use of Disney characters falsely suggested Disney’s affiliation with the day care facilities. -----unquote----- Retrieved from http://www.snopes.com/disney/wdco/daycare.asp See also: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1989-......ntatives ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

At the last Star Wars themed party I performed at they had a balloon Death Star.
I kept saying "That's no bloon" but nobody got it. Seriously though. If you're theming it because a client is having a SW party, they'll be happy with a couple of Star Wars balloons and a few Star Wars gags thrown into your usual show. |
