I ditto your thoughts above as well MagiKen. I have told this well known story before. The long time columnist cynic/critic/salty one "Clarke The Senator Crandall" for The New Tops Magazine once went to some kind of Gospel magic presentation where the magician was using a quarter to "represent Jesus". Then the magician apparently dropped the quarter and then stepped on it to keep it from rolling away. Clarke said sarcastically that he walked out of the lecture as he did not want to listen to a magician who had stomped on Jesus.
I remember once at an FCM convention years ago seeing a performer who was obviously just doing his regular magic stage act and then just tacking on at the end of each trick some observations about either God or something from his own personal life that had virtually nothing to do with the presented trick, let alone from a Bible passage that related to what he had done. Kind of like the several well meaning "power lifters" I have seen, who always then seem to take off on the passage "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." I could never quite figure out how crushing/twisting a can of Pepsi in your bare hands spraying soda all over the stage somehow related to a Bible passage. What Andre' Kole does makes much more sense- the first half of his program is "straight magic" and then he tells the audience before intermission he will be sharing his own meaningful life message in the second half where the tricks presented/Gospel message tie in closely together. Bob Zoerman calls this establishing the "right to share the Gospel." Like MagiKen, I am not a fan of a Gospel magician doing a "miracle" and then saying that God or Jesus does far greater miracles (apparently some notches better than the magician)- that seems like a rather weak application for sure. The one I dislike the absolute worst (and I have related this before also) is a spike "stabbing"/paper cup routine or guillotine effect where the message is "God can help us overcome our fears" (I actually saw this trick presented that way). Ouch, cringe city. The short routines I do now are almost exclusively in a church or Sunday School type setting. Usually less than 10 minutes. That would not work well in other settings, but it does work for me as most of my presentations are part of a larger and longer full kids Sunday morning worship program (and Gospel magic is only one small segment of it), continuing later with Bible teaching in their classrooms, or working on their VBS or crafts to take home, snacks, etc.. If you do Gospel magic, I would encourage you to get involved with your local church Sunday School ongoing program where the differently presented routines each week are expected/and looked forward to by the kids. I had several kids who told me in January they got magic sets last Christmas they had asked for. |

I can see we are on the same spiritual wavelength here in terms of what we see as acceptable as illustrative of the Word in performing arts as promoted by FCM. PTL! Just a preliminary thought on making the PRAYER spelling effect more in line with the message itself; How about including as part of the message about prayer insight on how messed-up our thoughts, actions, and lives can be when it [regular prayer] is not a part of our daily lives? Suggested message: “Daniel thought this so important he was willing to risk breaking the king’s new law (and facing a den hungry of lions) rather than not continue [to pray to the Lord] (NOTE: in keeping with the current theme of letting the students discover the omitted word, one could substitute “to do this”) “regularly even for just for a month. When we set our priorities right, even in our greatest confusion we can turn to God and the answer becomes clear. The word for the personal habit we need to have is a life filled with (Turn the card holder around) PRAYER!” Perhaps this is not the best way to connect the actions of the effect to the message, but it is a move in the right direction. I will need to check my calendar, but I may be on a mission trip at that time in April 2018. As to Indianapolis FCM this June, I am not sure I can make it this year. Some health issues with an elderly family member who may still need 24/7 health care; and I am it when my wife is at work. It looks like Jamie is out for Indiana nearer by any time soon. But maybe we could persuade him to at least come to GR or the KZ to do a lecture on a day and time I could make it. One problem I have had with the GR and KZ FCM meetings in the past is that many of them have been on Saturdays. I am a Seventh-day Adventist minister and anything before Saturday nights is usually taken up with church duties here. I just checked my 2018 calendar and April 7th is a Saturday, so even though I am still in the USA I will not be able to make it for that lecture either. Perhaps MagicBus and I could meet 1/2 way some other time. For each of us it would be about 30 miles putting us somewhere between Hartford and Lawrence, MI. From what I can see, there is not really a good meeting place in either I-94 exit town. Both have saloons; Hartford at least also has a bar and grill (Arrowhead B&G). I am not big on those either, but in a pinch . . . Maybe you know that area better than Google does. Any suggestions Magic Bus?

Roger - let me know some perspective dates and we can move forward from there - I'd love to come back MI (I lived in MI a while back)
I do like the prayer lesson and I plan on using it in my own way - thanks for sharing the idea! |
