For me, it is a matter of time but first a matter of energy.

Not many books. Probably only 1-3 a year. DVD's with the L&L sales... 20+.

I generally get 5 or so (usually due more to budget than interest; as such, a few of them are generally used copies to help keep the price down). Finding people willing to part with used copies of what I'm looking to buy when I'm looking to buy is usually the hardest part of that.

I'm reading rather fast, but I'm studying very slowly. To really grasp the thinking, building of routines and conceptualizing the principles, working the sleights, expanding the ideas...all that takes a loooong time. And of course, I need sometimes to check everything again because we always miss something, no matter deep was the understanding he first time.

Just to add that it is possible to have a great big magic library without big budget. I'm a teacher in France, and I have living alone most of my 22 years of magic. My income is around $ 2300. But ok, I'm not a materialistic person, so I need little money.

I used to buy a lot more but I would say in the 4-6 range per year. As for DVD's, probably in the same range. Unfortunately I tend to impulse buy half of those and I choose those that are well regarded here on the Café. I do find myself buying a lot of Penguin and At the Table lectures, but only because of the easy availability. I find that I tend these days to go over a lot of older material that I have collected in books but have somehow overlooked. Regardless I believe I would be better off buying half the number I mentioned in each and double the time going over what I already have.

It really doesn't matter how many you buy if you do not use them. I know a guy with probably over 500 magic dvds who hardly ever performs at all. If you don't read the books and perform some of what you learn, I guess they are ONLY for your personal enjoyment.

Nothing wrong with being someone who just wants to learn about magic in my opinion.

I second Christopher on this one. For me, and by far, the most enjoying part is the studying of magic. Performing a little for others is just a way to share that passion.

Nothing "wrong" with it. I just find it an expensive "collection" as opposed to a hobby. He does perform some but he just prefers to "Know" the secrets.

Having, and I assume watching/reading, a large collection has many other benefits aside from just personal enjoyment.
It would allow someone to find exactly which effects they do want to practice or perform - even if they only ever performed one trick once in a blue moon at least they'd know that out of thousands of tricks this was definitely the one they wanted to do! It would also provide a huge wealth of knowledge - which is nearly always good. The best methods, the best presentations, the key principles, etc. Even for the very occasional performer I imagine having a huge store of knowledge to draw upon is a benefit. Again, I envy those with access to mentors, club libraries, magic friends, or loads of dosh |

To make a comparison with music, someone who loves music, read the scores while listening, practice an instrument, compose some music would not be considered as a musician ? There is a tendancy in magic to condescendingly put a hierarchy between aficionados : first would be the performers, particularly the professionals one. Secondly come the creators. To my mind, it is irrelevant. Every way of loving magic is a respectable position.
Again, I'm doing paid shows at times, I refuse some, because my pleasure essentially comes from studying magic and maybe one day sharing all I've invented in books. There is almost no secrets anymore. Everything is available for someone willing to put little effort and time on the web. I've read on this forum that someone is purchasing some magic books just to enjoy the creativity of others to solve problems or adaptating known things to their style. Another way of having fun with magic. |

About 5-6 a year, a good tip is to check the 'Book of the year' thread on this website. Sure you might be a year late to the party but the books you do buy will be the best of the best and voted for by your peers in Magic.

I buy maybe 2/3 a year and a mixture of new releases and any old gems that I may come across. There is a lot to be said about the material that can be found within the pages of old magic books.
