Very nice trick. Do it always, and get the look of shock when complete, Spectators love it.

It was called Versa Plus.
Released by Ken Brooke in 1972 with full permission of the inventor, Roy Johnson. It was never published in any of Roy's books (nor elesewhere); because as well as purchasing the rights to the trick, Ken also owned the copyright. The basic move then inspired 'Wild Man Wild' by Hans Trixer - marketed (with agreement) by Ken Brooke in 1975. It became Ken's favourite packet trick. Just to add that the instructions released by Stevens Magic are not (or at least were not) the full routine sold by Ken. In fact, the Stevens Magic instructions I've seen were pretty naff, with just one sheet of basic instruction and some photos. They did not contain the full routine sold by Ken; and certainly do not do this wonderful trick any justice. The original Ken Brooke instructions are a three phase routine with a comedy ending. Pure commercial dynamite........as you'd always expect from 145 Wardour Street, London, W1.

Hi everybody,
I know that this thread is on the old side, but I wondered if anyone could sell me the effect (Wild, Man, Wild -- not Versa Plus), or at least direct me toward some instructions on how to perform it. Another route would be this: I could buy the Versa Plus trick from Stevens, and perhaps someone would be willing to explain to me how to adapt the moves in Versa Plus to those for Wild, Man, Wild. Thanks, Bob |

They are different tricks. Both wonderful.

The move in question is taught in several fine card books you probably already have - and it's not why folks bought either trick. Look in Deland's Two Card Monte item for the sleight...

Thanks, Jon. I tried searching for "Deland two card monte" and didn't come up with a description of the sleight. Can I have a hint, please, Dad?
If you know off the top of your head some of the books that teach the sleight, that would be great! Maybe I'm lucky and own at least one of them. See you, Bob |

The turnover sleight is used in monte routines and also in many of the gaffed ace assembly tricks.
It dates back to Hofzinser. If you subscribe to Genii Magazine see the November 2005 issue for his assembly routine. In particular look at the disposition of the third card of the four card packet. How are you doing with the Elmsley and Hamman counts?

About the turnover sleight -- does it have a more specific name? I don't subscribe to Genii -- that would certainly be a good investment, but I'm trying to cut down on my magic buying.
Thanks for asking about EC and HC. I haven't worked on either count, because I'm forcing myself to work on one trick at a time, though I'm continuing to read and think about other effects. Right now I'm concentrating on the HaLo cut, which I need for Nick Trost's Sub-Trunk Mystery -- again with my own story, about a 14 year old girl escaping from the dungeon of an evil wizard. In the meantime I think I've got a good game to go with the "devils" story we've talked about. Very simple -- just toss a die and, depending on the number that comes up, the blue devil has to discard a blue card while the red devil gets to add a red card to his hand -- or vice versa if the blue devil wins the toss. The die has fives on all six sides, and that's the red devil's winning number -- so he has the upper hand for a while, until his red cards start mysteriously turning blue... My current thinking is that the game ends when one devil runs out of cards -- and loses. But I have to see whether all these ideas fit together with sleights I can realistically learn. I'm still not quite sure whether this is Wild Card, Six Card Repeat, or, as you suggested, the Homing Card. I'm getting a bit dizzy thinking about the possibilities! I did buy Headhunter, and I have to try again to see if it will help me with my story. |

Ah... Is this by any chance the Curry Turnover Change??

You might have an easier time of all this if you start by getting some standard references - such as Expert Card Technique (Dover paperback) and Mentzers book on counts (ten dollars last I looked).

Expert Card Technique has the turnover around page 140.
You could spend more time getting your routine ready if you also had the Mentzer book about counts.
