But cheaper, I could see this as a good finale to a cube routine

I thought the cube looked pretty realistic
But that cube doesn't look like a speed cube , would be hard to fit it in my routine since introducing a different looking cube may cause suspicion .

Visuals are great on video, but gimmick you get is NOTHING like video. Not even close. Stickers are too small, looks completely fake. I do paid shows. Cannot use. Trying to return.

I decided to take a shot with this. Bought it from Magic and Such because they have such an easy, no hassle return policy. Yes, I was pretty sure I would be returning this.
But guess what? I am going to happily keep it. I really love it. I think it's a steal for the price which is only $30.00. Now if it had been $100 or more then yes, I would be disappointed. You receive a regular cube, the gimmicked cube, and a mat covered in a leopard spotted fabric. Like most effects, there are definitely pros and cons. The main con is that the regular cube you receive is a very cheap one and definitely not a speed cube. This is really of no consequence since you never really use this cube. However, the biggest disappointment is that the regular cube (and consequently the matching gimmicked cube) is quite large, approximately a half inch larger on each side than the commonly used cubes. This may not sound like much but it is very noticeable I think even to someone not real familiar with Rubik's cubes IF you try to use it as part of a cube routine. The main "pro" is that the spotted mat works extremely well in hiding the gimmick. The gaff vanishes in a flash and it's really hard to see if you don't know where to look. This is especially true if you change the cube to candies or anything that will spread out over the mat after the change. I think this mat is much more deceptive than one relying on black art. So that is a huge improvement with this model. Keep in mind though that this would look great in a small parlor show type of situation but I don't consider it to be a close-up trick. You need a little bit of distance, I would guess 4 feet or so minimum. I was hoping to use this as some kind of finish to a cube routine, possibly even as a call back at the very end of my show where some time has elapsed and I have performed a couple other non-cube routines in between so there is some time delay. You may possibly get away with most people not noticing it is a larger than normal cube, but then it isn't that critical even if they do since you're not stating it is the same cube you were using earlier. I still think that if used in that way it could be a nice and quick, very visual kicker ending to a show. Yes, it could be made better. Yes, it is does have a bit of a cheap look to it, but then again, it is pretty cheap. So all things considered I like it and I'm almost certain I will use it. The other thing that should be said is that in my case, I'm a big fan of DIY and customizing my props. So I will most likely make another gimmick myself, the right size to match my standard cubes and with a couple improvements to make it look and work better. It gets the job done as it is but I think a couple modifications could make it even better. I don't mark it down a lot for that because I enjoy doing that, but I certainly realize that for others it would be a deal breaker. But even as is straight out of the box it is certainly quite usable and functional and a good deal for the price. But if you're hoping to secretly switch your standard cube (such as from Rubicon) with this one for a socko finish, well, you will be disappointed because that ain't going to fly. |

Decided to bump this thread back up because I don't think this has gotten the attention it deserves, especially for the price. I think it was dismissed by many for various reasons but it's actually an excellent effect if used in the right context.
It works best (and I would only perform it) as an additional sequence to a Rubik's cube routine. And it's really for a stage or parlor show (or formal close-up similar to Magic Castle Close-Up room.) This is how I've been using it and it's gotten great reactions. I close my show with it, or more precisely use it as an encore effect. Just proceeding this I do a Rubicon routine with a couple modifications to Greg Wilson's routine. I use the Instant Rubik board as a tray on top of which is a paper bag and a couple cubes. I set the tray down and do my routine using the props which can be seen and no one pays any attention to the tray or cares about it. It's totally non-consequential and quickly forgotten. At the end of Rubicon I toss the cubes into my case (the bag has already been tossed into the audience) and it seems as if the show is apparently over. But then I announce one more quick piece of eye candy. I reach into my case and bring out apparently one of the cubes I just used or they may think it's another cube, either way it's doesn't matter. I briefly show the mixed up cube and say I will solve it instantly without even touching it, and that this is my favorite part because it's just pure "eye candy". As I finish that last sentence I drop the cube onto the table and rather than it being solved it visibly turns into a pile of Starburst candies. I immediately dump the candy into a small bowl and pass the bowl around as I am thanking everyone for their kind attention. In this context it works fantastically well and catches everyone off guard. I can literally see jaws drop and there is actually stunned silence for a moment. A couple points...done in this way people really seem to buy into it being a genuine cube and zero attention is paid to the tray as it's been sitting out for several minutes and the way it is introduced makes sense and seems completely innocent. There is a size difference between the Instant Rubik cube and the cubes I had been using previously but NO one notices this as they are never seen at the same time and the IR cube is shown very briefly. A hard core cuber may notice but that's an extremely tiny slice of the population and I haven't run across one yet to my knowledge. So just thought I'd share this info in case some of you may have dismissed this prematurely, and I understand the many reasons one would (and as I myself did for a time) because of the kind of goofy tray required, the larger size cube, and the real cube that comes with it is probably the most poorly made "working" cube I have ever seen. It's difficult to even turn it much less use it as speed cube, but again, I don't even use the regular cube in my routine so that's a non-issue for me. FYI, no connection to anyone making or selling this product. I've just been pleasantly surprised how well this has worked to close my routine and show. So if you've quickly dismissed it you may want to take another look if you think you can use it in the proper context. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S22665 |

I have impact cube and it is really not good. This looks way better. Seems like the gimmick has a magnet to quickly attach to the pad. The problem with impact cube, sometimes the gimmick sticks up. you never know when that will happen.
Impact cube was pretty pricey too. wish I would have had this as a choice. James

Yes, the entire gimmick is made out of magnetic material as is the tray itself so it sticks very securely. You can turn the tray upside down or even wave it around no problem.
And the "leopard pattern art" (as opposed to black art) works amazingly well. When I go to reset I even have to look for a second myself to see it. Plus, when you end with scattered candies on top it is virtually impossible to see. The reason I ended up going with Starburst candies is because you really need something inside the gimmick that will hold it's cube shape as you display the gimmicked cube. |

No, I've never seen Impact Cube in person, only on videos. I never felt confident that the method wouldn't give itself away so I dismissed it.
To be honest, I initially dismissed Instant Rubik's as well until I saw it on sale and even then I had very low expectations and was fairly certain I would end up returning it. But it turned out to be one of those rare instances where I was pleasantly surprised. The fact that Starburst are individually wrapped was a bonus and is nice because I decided to hand them out at the end. I bought a bunch of clear plastic bowls very cheaply at the dollar store and usually just leave the bowl and candy at the gig. When I bring out the bowl to dump the candy in it is already partially full and also has stack of business cards in it. I hand it to someone sitting close and ask them to pass it around. People seem to appreciate this small gesture much more than I had anticipated. My only small complaint about this routine is that it has increased the amount of props I need to carry. The rest of my show I can pretty much perform out of my pockets so this was a big move in the opposite direction of the way I had been moving towards. So for that reason I was hesitant to include it. But now I have found that even aside from the routine, just as a method to subtly hand out my business cards it has been well worth the extra effort. Hard for me to imagine not doing it at this point for that reason alone. |

This is a lot of fun and the price is right.
It does make me wonder what a more refined version would be like. Using a regular size cube would be nice, but all in all, this is a fun, quick bit of eye candy. Thumbs up. |
