Beautiful work in Chinese style. I was looking for a book - where this routine is probably described. But I have not found any links yet.

This is a very old effect found in many magic books - maybe even Tarbell. You can make it yourself for just a couple of bucks for the beads.
PM me if you can't find it. My books are packed away, but I can describe it if necessary. I do a version with three large yellow beads at various spaces amongst many brown, wooden ones. I cut the necklace to get at the large beads - and use them in a cup routine. When I restore the necklace the three large beads are in the center of the necklace "joined by magic" Maybe I should market it seeing as how the simple effect sells for $18

Where to start. That necklace trick on Penguin magic is a very old version of the Famous Arabian Bead Mystery. This is a classic in magic. I never seen it with extra string showing. Alberto Albenice, that author of the Reel Book, is credited for the more modern version where the assist is actually wearing the necklace. There war a mechanical version years ago, that worked differently. To my knowledge I have never heard or seen it in a book.
https://www.abbottmagic.com/Arabian-Bead......oryId=-1 You can find the working for the necklace on the Marvin Roy aka Mr. Electric video lecture from Stevens Magic. He made it up for huge audiences so he used one inch pearls, direct from his magical jeweler act. Have you purchased the Tarbell Course in magic yet? In those 8 books, you will learn all the principles in magic used by the old greats. Of course you have to read and study the books. Thanks for the video of Alberto Sitta, usually only used the Sitta name, he was a popular magician in Europe. He made many effects considered to be very sought after. To my knowledge there has never been a book on his life or magic props he made. Surprisingly, non of the magic effects in that video were marketed items by Sitta, to my knowledge. In the old days, vaudeville and such, many non-Chinese performers dressed up as Chinese magicians, some not revealing they were not Chinese. Have you watched the move "The Prestige" with Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale, You can see a sample of such a magician impersonating a Chinese magician. The cotton to smoke effect is a classic Chinese effect, Abbott's magic used to make and sell this effect, they recreated it about 20 or 30 years ago. The version they sold was more dangerous to perform, I have it. They also sold he smoke gimmick for years, but do to cigarette smoke being unhealthy even to onlookers, they no longer make it. The wet paper to snow storm is another classic of magic, and still sold today. Sitta presented a very cut down version, usually it is a torn and restored Chinese paper with symbols on it, torn up, wetted and fanned. Get the Faucett Ross book for details. The self filling bottle was made by a defunct magic company called Fabjance Magic. it was like a milk pitcher. The version Sitta used was more of Lota Bowl principle. You really missed the boat, as the last of Sitta silk and mutilated parasol effects were just recently in the last couple years sold by tricksupply.com . His magic was always very expensive. Abbott Magic even made a version of those Dragon side tables way back in the early 1940's, 50's and early 1960's, I was lucky enough to get the cut out template. The rabbits in the following videos are not real, they were called, "Kicker Rabbits". No rabbit is being harmed in these acts by holding them by the ears. The Famous Kuma Tubes! |

I use to do this 14 years ago when all those $.99 stores were so popular. I would by cheap 'gold & silver' necklaces and just use a change bag. I got some pretty strong responses (and a few threats) when I chopped up their necklace. Of course I failed the restoral at the end and had them reach into the bag and pull out their whole necklace.
Now I can no longer find passing necklaces (more than $8 now) that are cheap enough to destroy.
I still recall the day I met Beaker from the Muppets. He said to me "Meep, meep, mee mee mee Meep!", and that has made all the difference.
