Very interesting movie on gambling. Special features include card moves demonstrated by Robert Celestino the director who happens to know and performs quite capably. His false shuffle is very noteworthy because he does a zarrow and it is done much better than a lot of other cardmen. I call it a gamblers zarrow instead of a magicians zarrow. He also performs a deck switch which he does in the movie a second palming and a riffle stack. All of which he does well.

There is also a nice interview with Fast Jack in there. He was a consultant for the movie.
Slim p.s. Those that read the book The Last Hustler from Fast Jack know that he and Robert Celestino teamed up on poker games in Alaska. |

Bob Celestino ,like his father Yonkers Joe actually made a living as a card and dice hustler until he decided to go back to school and for-fill his life long dream of becoming a movie director and screen writer.
As I have said on other occasions, Bob Celestino and his father, Yonkers Joe had the one characteristic that separates the great card and dice hustlers from the pack, " A PAIR OF BALLS." I can speak and write with a degree of authority about this because I hustled with both Bob and his Dad along with most of the greats which were less then a hundred scuffs across America to reach that level. |

John I appreciate your comments. I really loved your commentary. Having been a hustler in my younger days I also would not choose that way of life if I had it to do over but I did enjoy it a lot at the time. I did not know that bob also hustled. Will you comment on the zarrow shuffle as a move in a game?

I am not familiar with the term, Zarrow shuffle , in my sub- culture we call it the riffle shuffle which is a very difficult move to execute especially if your playing ten handed TEXAS HOLD EM in a real live situation where lumps is trump if you were discovered. As far as I know ,there are only two people in the world that can emulate this shuffle and adhere to proper casino procedure and Celestino is one of them.

John thank you for your insight. I really enjoyed the movie and your commentary as well as Bob's sleight of hand moves.

On Jun 27, 2017, fastjack711 wrote: Thanks for the interesting comment looking at this "riffle shuffle" from a different perspective. The Zarrow Shuffle is a term used by magicians and hobbyist (who have their own nomenclature which is often different from that used by scuffs), designating a specific false shuffle technique which was "invented" by a magician named Herb Zarrow. It is essentially a breakout shuffle using a card or a few cards from one half of the deck to cover the breakout maneuver on the square up. As I recall from Celestino's demo of the false riffle shuffle in the addendum to the Yonkers Joe film that he used a variation of the Zarrow shuffle, holding the cards in his hands, shuffling against the table and angling the cards on the square up to block the breakout move. It would be more of a "private game" hustler type shuffle rather than a casino shuffle which would be done flat on the table. He may also be able to do it casino style flat on the table Zarrow type shuffle, but as I recall he did not do so in the video. However, it has been some time since I saw the video of him doing the move and people who hustle may use different terminology to describe what is being done or sometimes use no specific terminology at all. It is the magician and hobbyist crowd that have come up with their own nomenclature to describe various moves. In fact, most magicians and hobbyists Zarrow shuffle with the cards flat on the table flat "casino style" and because it is more difficult to conceal the move when done in that manner, in the vast majority of cases brutalize the move. They primarily fool themselves and since they can receive no "lumps" for screwing up badly, they blindly perform the shuffle with "fearless" aplomb. |
