Hey, my name is Taylor. Hollywoo is also fine.
I'm 30 years old and a graduate student studying anthropology. I have been doing a little bit of magic off and on for about two years, but due to time constraints (again, been in grad school), I wouldn't say I've become anywhere close to "good." Recently, though, I discovered mnemonics. Kind of. I was aware of little poems people used to memorize how many days in a given month, that sort of thing, but recently I came across one of Brian Brushwood's Scam School videos where his friend showed him how to memorize a ten-item list in under a minute using a peg system. I did that just to see if I could, then extended it to twenty items, worked on it until I could memorize it in ~80 seconds, and showed it off to some coworkers, who were amazed as they said numbers and I responded with the corresponding items. This was an interesting experience for me. People have told me I'm smart before, or clever, but I've never felt like I had good focus or memory. As someone with ADHD and anxiety issues, it was incredible to feel like I'm in control of my brain and not the other way around. Needless to say, I'm hooked on mnemonics, and I want to apply these memory "tricks" in order to get better at magic, now that I'll be starting an internship and have much less required of me when I'm not at work. I'm not sure if that's enough information, not enough, or what, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I look forward to discussion here at the Café! Edit: Oh, and escapology and sort of "dark"/weird magic appeal to me, too, but neither is necessarily something I want to focus on right now. The former for reasons of "I'm living by myself and don't want to practice escaping from things without someone around to let me out if I need it" and the latter because I think I need to get a bit more completely in terms of the effects themselves before I worry too much about aesthetic and presentation. |

Welcome hollywoo,
Good call on not practicing escapes alone. I'm really surprised schools don't teach mnemonics. So useful. -Mary Mowder |
