Ungimmicked and simple, not just an equivoque, Slamdown is still going strong. I always know where Jeff McBride is lecturing, because I start getting Slamdown manuscript orders from that area. Lisa Menna has added a nice touch during our workshopping.

Randi Rain makes an excellent one. Scott Alexander 's nailed it is excellent as well.

Personally, I used Spike! for years. The spike itself is wicked-looking, nearly comically dangerous in appearance. The detection method is surefire But it's not 100% safe, not by a long shot.
In fact, I used to perform the effect by first showing videos of other magicians spiking themselves (and sometimes their volunteers), creating a sort of "Twelve Have Died" mystique around the effect as well as selling the point that the danger is real. Because it is. I never spiked myself, but I did get close once. ONCE. I was tired, it was my third performance of the day, and I came THAT close to spiking myself. As others have pointed out on this thread, as long as you use a real spike/nail/knife, the possibility exists of a "brain fart" that leads you TO the spike instead of AWAY from it. Were I to perform this general effect again, I'd go with Scott Alexander's Shattered. As mentioned on this thread, it's just as effective as Spike! and 100% safe. Though, I have to admit, my performance of Shattered did involved some danger. I'd start by introducing a legitimate Coke bottle and a hammer, then "shatter" the bottle inside a rubbish can. In fact, I was whacking a light bulb while switching out the intact Coke bottle for the Neilsen gaff. Breaking glass always involves some danger. Alternatvely (and I'm sorry but I can't recall if this was Alexander's original presentation), I'd just smash empty bags against myself before revealing the Neilsen bottle in the final bag. It made a decent opener, but didn't play as long or as dramatically as my longer version with the actual bottle. |

I'm a fan of Outlaw Effect's "Scorpion." It looks painful, but not actually dangerous. Making sure to handle the scorpion with heavy-duty work gloves prior to the smashing can really sell the idea that the spiky black urchin-like prop is not something to be trifled with.

My preferred choice is to do a simple one using e___voque, impromptu.
Not on the exact topic, but for inspiration - from personal experience, changing up the routine (using e____voque) can work wonders too aka instead of a smash - drink acid vs water, pour a bag of nails over your head. Stick your hand in a bag of spiders or ants etc. |

Five years now since my original entry on death trap. I have only found one circumstance where I refused to complete the performance - with the sun rising behind me shining into the audiences eye. Now healed up at age 80 I am debating whether I need both sets as bookiings have slowed down so keeping one whole act packed and ready to go while the other is with the other isi no longer a concern. The set-up is easy and visibility works from parlor to large stage/.
Like all potential stabbing effects remain dangerous with real knives, one must pay focused attention in performance.

Love Scorpion, but haven't done any close-up performing in years. Would be willing to sell mine if somebody was interested.

I also own Rani Rain's spikes which are absolutely safe and look great. Willing to sell if somebody is interested in them.

I’m torn between the props in Rani Rain’s and Scott Alexander’s. Rani’s prop quality looks much better in the pictures and video, but the spike itself is nothing I’ve seen in the real world. Scott’s props don’t come across as well in the photos but clearly are large nails one could get at Home Depot. From you with first hand knowledge are my concerns valid or just nit picky? Is there any real difference in the prop quality in reality?

I’m always on the lookout for a better smash and stab and I must have used a dozen of them by now. Right now, my mainstay is Randi Rain’s, as I’ve found shattered to be cumbersome, and nailed it to be unconvincing. Pain game was a favorite of mine, but it was a bit clunky for me in the long run.
I’ve yet to find (or create) a roulette style effect that ticks all my boxes, but Randi’s has come closest so far.
Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.

Thumbs up (or is it hands down!) for Scott Alexander's Nailed it. The presentation is just as good as the props. Generates very real, palpable tension with the audience.
