Hello friends recently I looked up onto billiard ball magic seriously. And I must say I'm really enjoying the sleights and all. But one of the big problems that I'm facing is lack of coordination and rhythm. So I would like to hear from you guys is there any book/DVD that emphasizes on choreographing movements. I would also love to hear how the professionals out there choreograph there moves. Hoping to hear from you soon.
PS: I'm a real admirer of Lucas when it comes to ball magic and I'm really inspired by his moves. |

Courses such as those offered by the Chavez College f Magic cover the choreography or 'blocking' .. (routining if you will) so that you can coordinate the sleights with a pleasing and polished presentation. Beyond that, books like Showmanship by Fitzkee and Magic and Showmanship give general advice as to movement. And of course, you might consider taking a movement class (fencing, martial arts, dance) from a school or local community center that would give you a movement discipline to work within. Mime training is probably the one movement discipline that most accurately parallels what you need to learn in magic: Having your movements magnify your actions so that you can communicate without words and still have a graceful appearance.
As for the second part of your question, I am a full time pro. When I started out as a hobbyist, I took Gymnastics, fencing, martial arts, and mime training. Later on in my early professional career, I took Dance classes and got a degree in Theatre. So applying what I had learned in those fields made my magic much stronger. I have often felt that the one thing missing at magic conventions, was movement workshops that would allow attendees to work out the problems that they have in staging their acts... under the eyes of professional coaches. Along similar lines, Bob Fitch from New York (as well as many appearances in film and on Broadway) offers private act coaching and sometimes offers group seminars. You might visit his website or contact him for more details. He knows his stuff!

Joanie Spina's video set "Get Your Act Together" touches on choreography - she worked with David Copperfield in that and other capacities and also used to do consulting. Unfortunately, she passed away, but her video set and lecture notes are worth getting, reading, viewing and applying.
