What service do you use to ship magic tricks (from the US) you have sold overseas?
What do you say is inside? Toys? Magic? Thank you, Ed |

Ed...You cannot ship magic. Magic only exists, momentarily, in the mind(s) of the spectator(s) when a trick is performed, IF the magician presents it with a good presentation. Whether the magic is entertaining, definitely depends on the presentation by the performer. Magic is not, inherently entertaining.
I ship my book and DVDs via U.S. Postal Service, and label the customs declaration: Educational material, book, and DVD. If I were shipping PROPS (not "apparatus" --that's an archaic term from the 18th century. It "developed' when the buskers moved into the parlor. It was the dawn of the "age of science". Magicians adopted the title of "professor" and/or "doctor". They performed "experiments" in illusionary science, A large "laboratory" table, loaded with "apparatus" and "paraphernalia, was "upstage center" Several draped plant stands were "downstage" of the "lab" table.) I would write "theatrical properties" on the customs label. I hope that helps.

Hey! Them there "fox passes", give us old geezers, something to do! (hee hee)
OOPS, I didn't, in my haste, specify which service In CONUSA, I normally use USPS, but with HEAVY stuff (I recently shipped my Punch & Judy figures to a museum in Georgia.) UPS did the packing and shipping. That was a bit over a hundred bucks. I just sent my old Jet Sets to a friend in Minnesota. I'm in Michigan. UPS packed and shipped, for another hundred $. I'm not a dealer. I'm just "red lighting" stuff that I have no plans to use anymore. I'm 85, and, off the road. Yr's, 'til the curtain falls......... O

Another OOPS! (I'm not "getting" old, I AM OLD!)
I've never shipped any heavy props to the "old country", so I must plead ignorance in that situation. I would still consider them as "theatrical properties", but, I don't know what company does that.

I don't do it. I sold a trick, got an estimate from the post office, and added that price to the price of the trick. When I took it to the post office to actually ship it, the shipping price was more than double. All the post office could say was "maybe somebody made a mistake". I refunded the magicians money (he wasn't very happy - in Singapore I think) and swore I'd never do it again.

Plus- things can sit in customs, or get lost in customs. I just priced a piece to go to Russia and it was $70! When I issue my next list for sale I may give preference to US buyers first. ED Ps- Having said that, I have bought a ton of stuff from overseas without problem. Maybe I just have no clue what I'm doing (which is why I started this post in the first place.) |

Hi Ed, I use the USPS to ship to the U.K. quite a bit. For actual props, I usually just label the Customs Form as "Toy". For DVD's, I put "DVD-ROM (Family Photos)" and for books, I just use "Books" on the label.
I always mark the Customs Form as a "Gift" and will often write these words, somewhere on the package: "Happy Birthday!" Hope that helps! Best Magical Regards, Mark Williams
