For no apparent reason (or "Just to add my thoughts...") - After deciding to go into mentalism (and only mentalism) I stopped all magic routines, labels, and relationship to magic (as thought of by the public)...I am now a mindreader. I do not use the term mentalist because that is a term that *we* understand by the general public does not; however, everyone out there knows what a mind reader is.
Specifically, for marketing purposes, because I do not want to be hired for a gig and then have the client say "Where's the rabbit?" There is no confusion when we tell a possible client what we do that we do not do kids' shows, do not dress up like a clown, do not do balloon animals (all things that magicians are often thought of doing). I am a specialist. I read minds. |

If the latter, I believe we have taken the role, to an extreme that borders lunacy. Like the patient who thinks he's Napoleon because he's short and French. I'm not trying to be disrespectful to anybodies beliefs but to delude oneself into thinking something is real, can be dangerous. For me anyway, I will continue to use sound scientific and psychological principles to give the illusion of mind reading, I guess that makes me a magician so I'm in the right place.

BEWARE these Debbie downers and anything they say. They simply lack the self esteem or good will, to be positive or productive. Your belief in self, is more important and is all that matters, for your success to be glorious. |

That's interesting, thanks for sharing your perspective.
I think that in some ways I agree with what you say - that people that are more familiar with 'real' psychics will sense something different when watching a mentalist, however, I'm not sure they will automatically equate it with 'fake' or especially 'magic'. At least that has not been my experience. Most of the time after a performance I talk to audience members and though they don't always think I'm psychic, when they don't, they tend to go for the body language/suggestion/psychology explanation. But then it really depends on the performer and choice of material as well.

Maybe you could do two sites, one dedicated to you mentalist, another to you magician.

Interesting thread. I advertise as a magician and mentalist but like what was said before, most of the public do not know what a mentalist is. I also am a hypnotist but do not do stage hypnosis. I have to put up with the usual bday party calls.
I may be wrong but I think advertising as a mind reader would lesson my leads.
