Hello all,
I am Brian, and for the past forty years have called Alberta my home. Back in the late seventies I started getting in to watching magic shows, reading magic books, and generally becoming more and more curious. I guess I really got hooked after discovering the Paul Daniels show! From there it became a dizzy ride of learning, practicing, experimenting, and performing...mostly for coworkers and friends. I was employed as a Law Enforcement officer and found members of the public liked small magic tricks while on patrol. Children who otherwise were being ignored loved to get involved in simple card routines, or learning balloon magic. As life forced itself into my personal space, magic slowly receded until I reached the stage of just being an older, burned out, bitter human, drudging along that long path towards the sere, grey realm of the next world...in other words, your typical old curmudgeon. Sparking a new career as a wilderness teacher gave me new life, but something was missing. Lately I have rediscovered what the lost joy was. Magic! Magic is more than some conglomeration of parlour tricks; more than some guy in a cheap tux and top hat dispensing jaded rabbits from the depths of a "silk" top hat which smells suspiciously of mothballs...it is an ethos. Harlan Tarbell mentioned the seven basic priciples, and I do not think for a minute those were the main components of magic. To me, magic is the catalyst which sparks our imagination, our creativity, and our senses of adventure and purpose. Magic stimulates thought, and stimulates our basic abilities to create wonders from nothing. I am so glad I have rediscovered it, albeit now as an abject tyro! Finding this forum is, to me, as exciting as the first time I saw Mark Wilson. Thank you for being here, and thank you for allowing the likes of me to join! |

Welcome MudMedic,
You can't be much of a newcomer when you have already performed for people. You are past one of the biggest hurdles. Congratulations on coming out of the gloom. That state of mind ages us faster than most imagine. I'll see you in the Close-Up fora. -Mary Mowder |
