Thank you all for SO many tips during my lurking days.
I'm Kevin. I'm an IT Director in Washingon, DC. I am also a returnee to this amazing hobby, after 40 years. Wow...things have changed! And I say for the better. We did not have DVD's in the '70s. We didn't have the internet. I learned (sorta) from books. This forum was an eye opener. You guys steered me in the right direction to resume an old hobby and passion. And the iginition was... Card college. Incredible. I then decided to restock my library with other stuff that is probally now considered archaic. Expert card Techinque Card manipulation 1-5 A new onefor me - the Royal Road The Bobo book and DVD set And, for sentimal reasons...I went to school with his youngest daugter and his oldest was our baby sitter....Bill Simon's two published works. This all fine and dandy. What strikes fear in me as I return to the hobby is that I am living in the past. Guys like Dan and Dave strike the fear of God into me...I'll NEVER be able to that. Any way, I might chime in from time to time. I'm an amatuer hobbiest, I'll only post if I think it furthers the conversation. Like now....I'm sure this might be widly known, but I just discoverd it on my own. I found that when trying to execute the pass it becomes much more managable if you concave the deak, ie. edges up and center down. That elimanated the"stuck card" issue I always seemed to run into. Welcome, Kevin!
If you're returning to magic as a hobby, you might consider finding opportunities to rub elbows with others who share your interest. There's a chapter of the International Brotherhood of Magicians that meets in Alexandria, Virginia, on the first Wednesday of each month (at the Holiday Inn on Eisenhower -- meetings start at 7:30). And it looks like there's a Society of American Magicians assembly meeting in Winchester, Virginia. Either of these clubs will give you an opportunity to connect with other magic enthusiasts.
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.

Welcome kShephrer,
Don't worry about flourishing. You either like it or you don't. There are schools of thought that feel it is counter productive to show great skill. I like to flourish a bit myself but in the long run a good performance that connects with people will take you a long way (you can do both). If you are interested in flourishing, it may help to know that growing up, I was known for being clumsy with my hands. I now do one handed shuffles easily. Practice will take you a long way too. -Mary Mowder |

Hey Kevin, welcome!
I wish you all the enjoyment in the world, and I am glad to see you making a pass your own with a subtle modification! Strangely for me, I flub passes when I try that...usually I have to scream "Oh my Lord, what IS that?" and point over the spectator's shoulder to distract them when I try... Anyway, welcome to the Café. |

Thank you everybody. I am realizing I learned a lot when I was young. Now, as a full adult (almost an old geezer) it is even better. Thanks to recommendations here I have expanded my knowledge and skills.
This is so much fun, and this website is invaluable. Kevin |

Hi Kevin, as Doug said, IBM ring 50 meets in Alexandria the first Wednesday of the month. I can give you more information if you want about next meeting schedule (our bookclub is going to start working on the Royal Road). There is also a SAM chapter that meets in the press club in DC (there are several members here that belong to both).

Welcome Kevin!
Dan and Dave are awesome, as are most of the new breed of magic. They bring a grit, style, and honesty to the art that is totally fresh. I just keep reminding myself that great magic is great magic, no matter how many moves, riffs, or sleights are out there. If you turn your audiences' ordinary world into something extraordinary - even if just for a small moment in time - you have made magic.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Hey Kevin,
welcome back to the art and its not a bad decision as many members here have recommended, its important to join a local club especially SAM or IBM rings where you get to meet and also get an opportunity to start performing- facing the audience. Ring members can act as critics and help shape your skills. am an IT sales guy living in Michigan and am going through a similar situation as you are. Its all in the mind...just make up your mind and kick-start. good luck! |
