I've been doing magic now for 17 years and have been doing woodworking with my father since I was a kid and have decided if I should try to combine both of my passions. I'm wanting to build bigger illusions and box illusions. Does anyone have any recommendations on something I should try?

You might try looking for illusions in Paul Osborne's book, "Easy Build Illusions".
http://hamiltonholtinc.stores.yahoo.net/easbuilil.html Of course, there are other books and illusion plans available on the website. "The Big Black Book" is one of my favourites. http://hamiltonholtinc.stores.yahoo.net/index.html Even though Paul has passed away, the site is still run by his family. - Donald P.S. It's really a good idea to look through the plans and books, and think about your own show. You really have to find something that fits you and your own show.

In addition, anything by Rand Woodbury is invaluable. Having never built an illusion myself, the info has helped me in other ways. I build scale models (not cars) of different things, and Rand's tips can be found nowhere else. The WHYs of his designs really tell the tale! Ya find something by Rand Woodbury? Grab it!

Building your own props and illusions can be very satisfying. I would strongly recommend both volumes of Gerry Frenette's DVD sets 'Building Your Own Illusions'. These discs are a goldmine of information for the illusion builder and will pay for themselves many times over and save you making expensive and time consuming mistakes.
As for plans try checking out Steve Kovarez 'Magic Castle Plans'. He has instantly downloadable blueprints of a lot of classics and some original creations at reasonable cost. They sometimes contain build photos as well as detailed drawings. His sword box is a good illusion to start with and is a solid, deceptive prop with a kicker in it. Good luck in the workshop. |
