Anyone acquired this routine and can give some feedback ?
I've loved Helder Guimaraes' work so far, but this one book is quite expensive. If you bought it, did you find it worth its price ? What about the Quarterly issues ? Regards, |

I have read it and I think the basic answer is as follows: It is priced so high because it is a very well constructed routine that Helder has gotten lot of mileage from and it is one of his real "workers" and it is a lot better than most other multiple selection routines out there (IMHO it is the best).
Now assuming you take the routine itself and use it the way it is written up and use it regularly in your performance and do it as well as Helder, it would definitely be worth what you paid. The problem is that Helder definitely does NOT want you to actually use this routine regularly because it is HIS routine. And you should not want to use it because it is HIS. In other words, it is priced highly, because that is how much the routine is worth to HIM (It's actually worth a lot more to him, but I guess he wanted to keep it at a realistic price). So assuming you're not actually going to use the routine, what your left with is gaining from some interesting ideas and techniques that you can adapt to other of your own routines. As far as that goes, it's debatable whether it is worth your money. As far as seeing how to construct a full-fledged routine and getting an understanding of how to think when designing a routine, like all of Helder's work (check out Reflections book), I think you get very good insight in that regard and there is definitely what to gain from. So the choice is up to you, and why exactly you want to get it. I know I haven't been very specific, but I hope you got something out of my response. Yehuda |

I sessioned with someone who allegedly bought the book (I don't doubt that he read it; I do doubt whether or not the kid forked over whatever it costs and then freely spoke about its contents). I should also confess that I have not carefully studied the multiple selection plot. For me, it's always been a trick involving a bunch of revelations, ideal for a bar. I can't recall any of the revelations Guimares uses -- maybe they're amazing -- because all of that was beside the point. What struck the group as interesting is the thinking about how it begins and ends. Very clever, and not like any multiple selection routine I've seen before (though as I said, there are serious gaps in my knowledge when it comes to this plot, so I wouldn't be surprised if sure others have had similar thinking). Off the top of my head, I can't think of another version that fosters as much conviction that the selections have been lost in the pack. The ending condition is also fascinating, and the mind races with possibilities.
So far this sounds like an advertisement. The routine comes with trade-offs. In my opinion, which sort of echos the poster above, it's impractical for the vast majority of performers (let alone posters here, including myself). It's nice to think about, but it's not something most people will ever do. Similarly, I dug Red Mirror, but I've never used any of it. This is not a bar trick finale; it's the opening of a parlor show (and your magic should be pretty !@#$%^! amazing if you're using multiple selection near the beginning of a set with cards). There's probably a very good reason why most people do this pretty much the same way: because it works. This is like an Italian sports car: you pay a lot of money for something you're not going to use that much (if at all). I don't see the point.

I do perform some red mirror routines (I love the balancing thread one) do you know if it compares in terms of difficulty?

No idea. And I'd say the routine you mention is one of the more practical items from the DVD. His best trick is the one that he uses to close out the show. Do you do that one?

I'm not sure which one it is, but I believe I never found the prop for this one and don't know how to make a good looking one by myself

I've read the book and studied a lot of multiple selection routines. My favorites for Parlour/stage are Crescendo by Helder Guimaraes and Joshua Jay routine. There was a great performance at the Magic Castle of Crescendo on Youtube by Hannibal ( with some bits of him) some time ago but can't find it now. Maybe if you ask him...

Most memorable moment - with Maestro Juan Tamariz & Consuelo Lorgia in FISM Busan 2018.
