I am hoping to be in Clearwater, FL over the first weekend in February. Looking for any advice you can give about performing there. I have already sent an email to Dallas the Fire Guy who coordinates Buskers' on the pier.

The busking is not on the pier but in a play ground kinda.
It’s a tough spot to work and make money. All the acts setup and go one after another or at the same time. Not a big fan of jockeying for a buck. Last time I was there Gazzo did a show looked at his hat and said let’s get out of here. To each there own, others seem to love it. |

I was there as a tourist a few years back and the street performers were very organized and did very big hats. The pier was busy all day and late into the evening.
If you can get on the rotation it looks like a good deal. BTW make sure you take time to visit Winter the inspirational disabled dolphin with the prosthetic tail at the Clearwater aquarium, very inspirational.( the movie a dolphin tale was loosely based on) |

OK not sure what may be considered a big hat?
When a pro looks at his hat and says let’s get out of here that tells me something. You can’t work during the day if you get caught you get a strike against you. The rules are you have to do the draw then wait for the OK and then you can work. Usually around 3 or 4 pm I’m not knocking this spot if you have never been go check it. Years before that festival ever was that spot was a gold mine. Dexter Tripp and myself worked it. |

Are you saying that you can't perform before the draw? If so, do you know why?

Get a hold of Dallas. He'll give you all the details. You need to have insurance and you have to have a background check. It's not the biggest money pitch in the world, but you can do good if you know how to build and work a strong hat. Gazzo is Gazzo. He hasn't changed a lot over the years but the people and the crowds have. People are different today, than they were in the 80's and 90's. Don't be mean, even if it's in fun, people are easily offended these days, so tread carefully and keep them on your side. Just because they laugh, doesn't mean they'll give you money...especially if the laughs are from being made fun of, or if you embarrass them or if you make them uncomfortable. Go out there, have fun and leave it at that.

I was in Clearwater for a long weekend. Dallas and his son Nick were helpful and friendly as were the other performers. Tried to work a trickle show for the first several nights without a lot of success. Did a half circle show the last night which was a better fit.
