This goes back to Tom Daugherty and found many incarnations, e.g. by Sal Piacente, Geoff Williams and recently Atlas Brookings.

Search for 4, 5, 6 Packet Trick and you're done.

Interested in the Atlas Brookings one. Know the actual name of the effect/release from Atlas Brookings?

My interest in this effect got piqued so I did some more research. The original effect (with 3 piles back then) dates back to even 1938 and was devised by Paul Rosini, as described e.g. in "Card College - Volume 1", page 147.
