Here are my two cents. I think if you are hired to entertain 4 year olds for example, you should do just that. It won't matter if there are older people there, they will enjoy your interactions and kids reactions. If the older kids are bored, and don't like what you are doing, so be it, you are not there to entertain them. I have done the same pre school for many years in a row. My show rarely changes as the kids are different each year. The teachers have seen me many times and still enjoy watching the kids have fun. Are the teachers bored? Probably, but they keep hiring me.
If you are at a party to entertain all adults and there are kids present. Sure you should have something for them, but that is not why you were hired. Rock bands play their music, if a parent brings along their kid and the kid is bored, do you think the band cares? |

That's not a bad point David. I think the best doing exactly what you state can still be entertaining to all, even if they are focusing on the younger ages.
i remember years ago performing the change bag trick with a set of nesting wands, dropping all over the place for a little kid with lots of adults in the audience. I could hear all the adults laughing at the madness. It made me realize how much fun adults could have even tho it was not an adult type trick. why.. because watching the kid and the wands was entertaining to them. that event gave me new perspective going forward.

"Sorry that you didn't like my comments. I've been at this for a long time, and, I've learned to "tell it like it is!" Today, 24 October 24,2019, marks 74 years since my first school show, October 24, 1945. That's well over 22,000 shows, from coast to coast and border to border.

Good points but I still know there has to be away to switch characters to it can be a family show for everyone - including using gag effects for the little ones... or I think .
Yes definately agree that parents love watching their kids laughing and having while being impressed at same time. Just want to get adults involved more - maybe ideas on adult volunteers with some comedy. MagicJac Miami, Fl |

Sorry Jac!
If it's Family party, and, the adults aren't off having a cocktail (or two!) I ENTERTAIN THE KIDS. I do not do 'kiddie" tricks. No Hippity Hop Rabbits, or Dove Pans! With the exception of an egg bag, and 3 linking rings, it's all GENERIC PROPS. The same tricks get standing ovations from high schools. and, colleges! The entire program is SIMPLE AND FUN. It kept me working for fifty years, coast to coast, and border to border! It might help you, if you were to read my book! Joe Stevens keeps them in stock. He usually has my dvd (of my show) in stock, too.)

Hi MagicJac,
I'm not the expert here by any means. That title goes to Dick Oslund. If I had a dollar for every time I've read his self penned resume here in the Café I'd think about giving up doing half my shows and still paying the bills. Love you Dick. What I've done over the years at kids birthday shows is incorporate throw away lines for the adults who are watching. I have one with a balloon gag/routine that is rather silly and I will pick out and adult and say to the kids "Do you all see the lovely lady/man standing or sitting over there? He/she has been looking at me funny right now, and I know what they're thinking about me right now. They're looking me and thinking "What a stupid way to make a living"!. I then say..."I've seen that look before", the next gag ends with me with a huge foam red nose on my face. I then turn to the same adult and quip..."I bet you're thinking it now"! Over the years I've taken the chance to throw these things in if I think it will add to the show. I have lots of silly things I do to bring them in. Many parents comment to me later that they love it that I do try to include the adults as best as I can, while focusing on the kids that I'm being paid to entertain. If I'm at a school, or any other show that there are no adults around, I just concentrate on the kids. My experience. 10,000 shows,,,,65 years in the trenches,,,,,standing ovations from China to India to the Maldives to the boonies of Australia. Never been out of work or under appreciated. Haven't written the book yet. (Thanks Dick) I've never given away a free rabbit to every kid I did shows for as I traveled around in an old van. (Thanks Howiediddit) Was invited to join the Magic Café by Steve Brooks the day it opened it's doors. Only had 4 different categories to start with. I watched on the sidelines for a year before taking the plunge to dive in here. What a journey.

Yes you are correct, I did post three words, but I have no limit on the amount of words I can post, The two word limit was self imposed by Slappy in the post above me; Slappy posted, “two words Woody Pittmen”, I asked Slappy the question, “good or bad” Slappy never came back to elaborate if Woody was a good guy or a bad guy.
We were supposed to get together for lunch along time ago are you ready now? |
