I was fooled by a trick that is similar to the 21-card trick. Ten pairs of cards are face up on the table and the spec mentally selects and remembers one pair of cards. The pairs are picked up in random order and given back to the performer who deals the cards into a 4 x 5 matrix (4 rows). The spec is asked to point out which row (or rows) the cards that make up the pair is (are) in. (The two cards of the pair could be in the same row or two different rows.) The spec does so. The perform reveals the cards the spec is thinking of.
Although I reverse engineered a solution (which is clever), I wonder if there is anyone here who knows what this trick is called or can give me a reference. Thanks. David Martin |

This is an ancient trick, most commonly referred to as Mutus Nomen Dedit Cocis.
Here's a quick historical primer: http://www.conjuringcredits.com/doku.php......en_cocis |

I know there are more modern words that can be used instead of the latin ones.

Thank you Rupert. "This is an ancient trick..." And I had never seen it. Nor, AFAIK, is it in any of the 70 or so books I have on card magic. Go figure.
"I know there are more modern words that can be used..." After a quick search: ATLAS-BIBLE-THIGH-GOOSE. Despite being "ancient," this might warrant some exploration. For example with the more mathematical approach I came up with, after gathering up the pairs, the packet of cards can be mixed (by the performer) and cut (by the spectator) before laying out the matrix. Thanks again. DM |
