Hi, everyone. I registered on this site a little over a year ago and have been lurking for many years prior. Lately I have encountered many threads to which I would love to contribute, so I figured I should finally step out from the shadows and introduce myself.
A little about me... I'm a 44-year-old guy living near Atlanta who has loved magic since I first saw a televised performance by the late, great Doug Henning several decades ago. I wish more than anything that I could say I have been practicing and performing since that day, but unfortunately, that's not the case. If only I could turn back the hands of time. I enjoy watching all forms of the art, but my main interest is card magic, with a focus on non-gaffed/gimmicked effects. I'm really not a fan of anything mathematical/self-working, but I hold no animosity towards anyone who enjoys or performs magic of any flavor. While I have become somewhat adept with a deck of cards, I still consider myself an amateur as I have never performed a paid gig and rarely perform for anyone other than close friends (damn you, social anxiety!) My favorite (living) card magicians are Dani DaOrtiz, Michael Vincent, and Richard Turner, despite the fact that he refers to himself as a card mechanic, the things he can do are truly magical. I think that's enough for now. I look forward to interacting with many of you on the boards. Happy St. Patrick's Day! |

Welcome KaseKing,
Most of the members here are hobbyists so don't worry about that. Some of the best Magicians past and present have been amateurs. I'm always amused when Magicians say they only perform for Family and Friends and are nervous about performing for strangers. Family and Friends are MUCH harder to perform for than strangers. Family and Friends know your body language and can tell when your actions and your choice of words don't ring true. Strangers don't know you and if you did fail in front of them, you'd probably never see them again. Strangers have more respect for you than your Brother. Your Brother will never allow that you might have Magical powers. I've seen guys who have been in battle be afraid to perform for strangers. If you can sign a mortgage you can perform for strangers. If you can ask a girl out, you can perform for strangers. If you can deal with gym class as a teen, you can perform for strangers. You just have to face being marginally bad for a bit and commit to assessing your performance after each encounter. You will improve quickly. It helps to practice while imagining friendly supportive audiences and realize that most people are very supportive and positive. They are more afraid of you failing that you know. They don't want to be embarrassed for you so they are really on your side. -Mary Mowder |
