Could anyone steer me in the direction of a DECENT, basically trouble free Appearimg cane? To be honest, I purchased one from an extremely well known company, whose name (ahem) shall remain nameless,
Anyway, it turned out to be a waste of my good money. Honestly, the thing is pure crap. A huge disappointment. I need it for the Dan Harlan "T-Bag" routine. I will transform it into a facsimile of a golf club, with the aid of epoxy and a toy golf club head. I don't want to waste anymore cash on appearing canes that are junk. Can't afford that. Dan didn't really specify the brand of the appearing cane that he used, but I can see it worked pretty well. Trouble free. As I said, one end will be the golf club head, which means the tip would have to be sufficiently large to epoxy on the ersatz club head. But even beyond that, it should open easily and smoothly, so as to facilitate a smooth, non fumbling appearance from the bag. Any recommendations? I'm willing to pay for quality, as I don't want to have to purchase several in order to find a good one. That would add up! Want to get it right the first time. Er, uh, really rather the second time. All help appreciated here.

How would you like an original RUSS WALSH Appearing Cane? I've never used it in my show. I've tried it a few times, and, it has never yet failed to "appear". I bought it in the estate sale of the late C. THOMAS MAGRUM. Pm me if you like, and, we can discuss price.

Appearing and Vanishing Canes are usually black with silver or white tips. Yes, I know canes from China and Hong Kong, come in a variety of colors.
What you want is silver canes from India. I have several. I would suggest you purchase Jeff Hobson's appearing Golf club, already made in better quality then you mention and it is only $45.00. http://www.hobsonschoicemagic.com/ |

Yes, definitely get the Hobson Appearing Golf Club! He's done all the work. Also, if you ever have trouble with any appearing cane, lightly spray it with silicone lubricant. Then, wipe with a dry towel and it will work like new.

Awesome! Dan, you didn't mention in your video that there is one already pre-made! Sounds like I hit the jackpot! Will save me a ton of trouble. Exactly what the doctor ordered. I must have had a brain fart to not think that someone somewhere over the rainbow had not marketed one pre-made. Guess my mind was in a narrow rut. D'oh!
To be honest, I think the routine is fabulous, Dan, and I've been wanting to do it ever since I first saw the video. It fits PERFECTLY in that slot in the trilogy. Would really "complete" my show. Would you guys happen to have a link handy to the item?

For now, and for purposes of Dan's routine, I'll purchase the pre-made item, but for pure personal enjoyment, perhaps a little later I'll get the Walsh cane from you when I have a little jingle in my pocket. I'm really dying to get my hands on it just to experience the quality. Many moons ago, I purchased an appearing cane from Tannen's back when ithe shop was still officially called "Lou Tannen's", but for the life of me, I don't remember the brand name, as that was back in the '70's.

Daffydoug, Jeff Hobson's appearing golf club is relatively a new product. He had them available several months ago and they sold out quickly. I checked before I posted to see if they were back, and they were, lucky you. The previous price was about double the current price.
3 in 1 oil is very light oil, it would be fine to use, but takes a long time wiping off the excess oil so it will not get all over your hands and cloths. Russ Walsh canes suggested an oil that somewhat evaporates and leaves an wax coating on the cane to prevent rust. Don't know if is still available at hardware stores, but I guess it would not hurt to check. The silver canes do not rust, so really no oil is necessary, except if you feel it would improve the production. I would spray something like WD 40 on a cloth and just wipe the cane to give a very light coating to improve the performance. |

Doug! (and, Bill) I was not aware that Dan Harlan had a "golf club cane" available. Yes, it makes sense to use what Dan has for sale!
I'm in no hurry to sell Clem Magrum's cane. I was 14 when I first saw the Walsh canes. Clem opened with the vanishing cane, in the old classic way (white silk, and confetti)! Years later, when I was attending Abbotts GTG, Russ Walsh sat in front of me, and, we could visit. I still have several of Clem's vanishing canes, too.

In placed my order for the Hobson club, while they are still in stock.

Hobson product finally arrived today. Upon inspection, it looks pretty good. Silver. Looks like the head is pretty securely attached to the cane, which is paramount, as one does not want it separating after only a couple performances.
Dan suggested epoxy, but it appears Jeff used another method, but that's good, as long as it holds. Length is about 43 inches, as opposed to 38 for the other came I mentioned. Size matters. So, I've miraculously gained 5 inches overnight. Seems to collapse with moderate ease. But I think I'm still gonna add some extra lube. Dan suggested a toy club head to keep weight to a minimum, whereas I see that Jeff used a real club head, which will add substantially to the total weight, but I'm just going to have to grin and bear it, after I construct the bag. All in all, though, seems to be a quality product.
