Hi,
With so many things being produced by 3D printers these days, props for magic included. Has anyone tried or heard of the gimmicked egg for the Silk to Egg effect being made with a 3D printer? With every detail of the egg being able to be made exactly as one wants, size of the egg, thickness of the shell, size of the hole, it stands to reason that such an egg would be the most perfect, real looking, and possibly strongest version ever produced. Or not? I’d love to hear your thoughts about this. I was told there are some members here with lots of experiance here with 3D printing. Thanks in Advance - Izzy Jay |

Strength would be very dependent on shell thickness, but it surely would be possible to create such a gimmick on a 3D-printer. As to how realistic it would look, well that's highly dependent on the finishing process. Straight off the printer (and up close) you would be able to see the layer lines (if using FDM printing), but sanding/priming/painting could take care of that.
Using a resin based printer would give a better finish straight off the printer, perhaps good enough for use without any post-processing. With FDM, I'd say that a .8 mm shell thickness would be the bare minimum for strength, preferrably a bit more. |

Any clue regarding anyone that does custom 3D printing jobs? I’d love to have a 3D printed version of Silk to Egg.

And I’m going for, hopefully, indestructible. So the thicker the shell the better.

Well, anything beyond 1.6 mm would not be necessary, I think. This should be a fairly easy design and printing job, which should be doable for a lot of people. Perhaps there is a makerspace local to you where you could ask someone to help you? You'd need to know exactly how you want it, and be able to convey that information to the person designing it.

Ok. Thanks for all the info. Was hoping there were guys like 3dmagicworks.com that already produce magical props via 3D printing and are therefore already familiar with magic. It would make the process somewhat easier. And easier to explain.
I can just imagine the guy’s face. Hi, I’d like to print an egg with a hole in it. What?! |

Thing is, there are multiple versions of this. Some versions are just the shell with a hole, others are split in half with a fake yolk in it, not sure which one you think of. I'm based far away from you, so you'd be better off finding someone closer. The single shell version would of course be a simpler design than one which can be "cracked" open to pour out a fake yolk.
Another option could be to carefully cut a hole in a real egg, then empty it and clean the insides before pouring epoxy into it and turning/rotating it to distribute the epoxy in a thin layer inside. You'd have to repeat that process multiple times I guess, until you got a thick enough layer of epoxy to make it strong enough. |

I’ve been using the Viking Magic version (resin) and Bob Sanders version (ceramic). They’re both single shell versions and of great quality. However, they don’t really get along with gravity.

I understand. I guess a 3D-printed version with a reasonable shell thickness should be able to withstand being dropped from reasonable heights, but it will clearly not be indestructible. An option could be to print it with flexible filament, there are many kinds and of different hardnesses (shore).

I printed an egg with my 3D printer. My intent was to use it with an egg bag so it wasn't hollow with a hole, but it could be made that way.

How’d it look? Compared to a real egg?

I guess about a year or so ago I built a modern version of the Automated Band Box....I 3D printed the heads on the musicians...I varied the paint job on each to make them look different...
