I can't believe it but I won! I was actually thinking about how I could recreate the effect on my own.
I can't wait to use it. Thank you Murphys and Magic Café! |

Just got it an hour ago. Thank you Murphy's! I haven't had a chance to look at the video yet. The gimmick is clever indeed!
I'll write a review after I watch the video. |

REVIEW OF GUMFOUNDED:
I got the package today and looked over the materials and video. I have not yet set it up or performed it but would like to share my thoughts with you all on this effect. The package is about the size of a CD case. Inside you get the gimmicks and links to video tutorial and link to pdf to print out additional gimmicks. THE VIDEO: The video is 40 min long. In the video they go over the performance, the gaffs, a breakdown of the routine and then variations along with a short history. The discussion is good and you realize that you can play this out for a lot longer than you would think. In the advertising you see the reveal on the gum box and then the gum sticks so you could assume this would play out fast. But in the video you see that you could do a 2nd reveal using the pdfs. With the stuff they send you, you can only reveal one card (more later on this). So if you use the linked pdfs then you can do a reveal on the box, and a 2nd reveal on the gum stick. You could also do a third reveal using a normal stick and additional playing card. Steve goes over how he does this. On this there is a variation as well. So I think you may be able to stretch it to a fourth reveal but that could be overkill. Getting 3 people involved is probably more than enough. So if you think about it, this effect can run for quite a bit. So you could do it to an audience. The fact that your are using gum makes it a bit unique and the majority of people have not seen something like this so it would play well I believe. THE GIMMICKS: I classify the gimmicks in 3 groups. The gimmick to be used on the normal box of gum, the gimmick to be used on the gimmick, and the gimmicked sticks. I'm sure most of you figured out the 3rd group. The gimmick which essentially allows you to reveal the card on the box is very clever. I felt a bit stupid I didn't figure it out earlier as my kids have something like this in one of their toys. This gimmick is re-usable and you get a set of 2. I can't imagine you EVER needing to replace, no matter how many performances. The gimmick used on the box may wear out over time due to normal wear and tear as any gum box would. I would have liked to have seen a 2nd one included or at least a pdf of it. I'm thinking of scanning it. The box essentially only allows 1 specific card revealed so you can't really do the box reveal to the same people twice. On the gimmicked sticks there are 2 reveals (1 which is the same as on the box and another card). You get ready-made gimmicks for the 1 reveal but if you want to do the 2nd card then you have to print out from the pdfs. On the pdfs, you only get 2 reveals which is a shame. I think they could have included a bunch of different cards, I don't see why they didn't. It would add so much more value I think. Essentially I think via the use of the pdfs, the whole effect could have been recreated for almost any card in the deck and repeated to even the same audience. But without the pdfs this would be difficult. THOUGHTS: I look forward to doing this when I get my hands on a Wrigley's gum pack which is needed. Or perhaps something similar and with same green colour. In my country there is no Wrigley's but I will have a friend bring me a few packs. This though should not be a turn off to any international magicians because gum is gum and I don't believe anyone will say "What's that brand? I haven't seen it". Really, no need to make a big deal out of it. Especially when you perform similar to the video where he takes out a gum, tears it in half and offers 1/2 to the audience. Once people see the shape of the box and you handing out and chewing, no one will question the brand. I like the quality of the gimmicks received and the video made be realize how I can perform this and stretch it out. My only advise would be that the pdfs included more card reveals and 'box' gimmicks. Care on the presentation will be what makes this good or not. Finally, you can essentially bring the box of gum up to the spectators' eyes and they won't see the gimmick. After the box reveal, you can even hand them the box. I wouldn't before but there is also no need to. It's just a box of gum. There is a tiny bit of dirty work but with natural movements which are part of the performance, even a beginner can pull off. I hope the above is helpful to anyone interested in this effect. |
