I've tried to search the forums but either I was ineffective with my search terms or this has not been discussed.
As I understand it, Harry Lorayne's Classic Collection books are collected reprints of some of his original books which he updated and revised for this series. Are the versions in the Classic Collection series now considered the "definitive" version of the original books and supersede the originals? Is there value from a learning (versus a collectors) perspective in having the originals in addition to, or along with, the versions published in the Classic Collection? |

I have the entire Classic Collection from Harry and many of the original books as well. Aside from a collectability perspective I see no value in having both. The Classic Collection are superior in my opinion as they have corrections, updates, and clear photos.

Either or, your choice. I like the Classic Collections as he's taken the more popular effects from the various books and updated them and now with photos. I think one of the editions is out of print.

Tom G:
You mention that he has taken the most popular effects and updated them. Does that mean what is in The Classic Collection are book excerpts and not the entire (updated) texts of the original books? If so, that would imply the need to have both the originals and the updates in The Classic Collection. Am I understanding you correctly? I do not have access to the originals to compare for myself. Thanks for any guidance you can provide. |

The contents were re-described because Harry didn't own the copyright on the original books; the publisher did.
Either version should be sufficient for learning large quantities of good card magic. I prefer the original Close Up Card Magic due to the Ed Mishell illustrations, but others' preferences may vary. |

Just to keep it clear - you can't make a definite statement like that, Tim - 'cause it ain't so. Yes; there is/was a bit of a copyright "thing" with my first four original books, the ones I did for Lou Tannen. After that - and that's over twenty books, starting with REPUTATION-MAKERS - I own all the copyrights.
LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Vol. 1 is long out of print/sold out, so it's silly to discuss the illustrations/photos, or whatever. Vol. 2 is heading toward "sold out."

Oh, and mostly, what started it all - I was talked into re-writing/updating/adding to all the effects/routines because those first four books were all out of print - so that's how LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION was born. And of course I wrote/taught much better in the volume(s) because I sure do learn as I go along!
I thought that that would be it - those who have that first volume will see that there is no "Volume 1" on it. Because - I had no thought of doing any more volumes. That started because of requests/demands. Thought "okay, I'll do one more because REPUTATION-MAKERS, RIM SHOTS and AFTERTHOUGHTS were also out of print; put "Vol. 2" on that one because now there was a volume 1 - had to differentiate. (Vol. 2 is my favorite of the five "classic collection" volumes) - and the requests to re-write/update/add to those became stronger and stronger. And so ... eventually evolved up to LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Vol. 5 --- all, incidentally, copyrighted by Harry Lorayne, Inc. Just wanted to make it all clear.

A belated thank you for clearing that up, Mr. Lorayne. And thank you for signing my copy of Classic Collection Vol. 5 at Diamond's Magic recently. I received it in the mail from Vince DeAngelis a week or so ago and very much appreciate the personalized inscription. Wish I lived close enough to the signing to meet you in person. Will soon have a copy of Volume 1 when it arrives from H&R to complete my set. Then on to work collecting Apocalypse and Best of Friends.

Vince was offering a sale, sad to say. I am a sucker for a deal. And I thought you were out of stock on hard copies of Vol. 1 or I would have gotten it from you since I had so much trouble sourcing one.

I have a bit more specific question. Are the "books" that are "re-written/updated/added to" contained in full within the covers of The Classic Collection volumes that they appear in? The reason I ask is that the page numbers don't add up (classic collection having less than the total pages of the individual books). However, as a point of reference, I am comparing the total page numbers as supplied by the "more info" section of the e-books on the Conjuring Arts Site (which may be the problem as formats could just be different like font or page size).
For instance, The Classic Collection Vol 1 contains " Omissions, Additions, Decisions, Revisions, Upgradings and Updatings for and of Close-Up Card Magic, Personal Secrets, My Favorite Card Tricks & Deck-Sterity, Bonus, The Epitome Location " and shows 458 pages singly --- Close Up Card Magic - - - - - - 274 Personal Secrets - - - - - - - - 52 My Favorite Card Tricks - - - - -70 Deck-Sterity - - - - - - - - - -166 The Epitome Location - - - - - - 36 Total of all 5 - - - - - - - - -598 This seems to leave "The Classic Collection" 140 pages shy of the "Original" individual books where it seems there should more rather than less. Again, this may just be a formatting / font / spacing / layout issue. I have no idea what the "norm" is in comparing an ebook to a physical copy. But, I also purchased the "Best of Friends Vol 3" book a few years ago from Conjuring Arts in PDF form and it contains 522 pages (as does the psychical copy described on Penguin's site although out of stock) Penguin lists it a 522 pages. So, in this case, the PDF page amount is equal to the Physical book page amount. On the contrary, the PDF of Classic Collection vol 4 shows 432 pages and my Physical copy on this Volume contains 406 pages for a difference of 26 pages (more in the PDF). Meaning in this case of a 1 on 1 comparison - the PDF has more pages than the original. So my specific question is, is anything "left out" of the Classic Collection volumes that was in the original single books?

Now I am confused--something that happens easily, sadly.
Mr. Lorayne, are you saying that the versions of the books in Vol. 1 have been edited down? If so, are the deletions material you felt was no longer worthy or relevant? Or is that the material did not need updating--you remained pleased with it and felt it needed no revision--and people interested in it should seek out the original book. I guess what I am asking is, do the versions in the Classic Collection REPLACE the originals meaning there is no reason (from a learning/reference perspective) to keep the original if you have the Classic Collection version? Or should the Classic Collection be viewed as an addendum/errata correction of the original but having the original is still needed? If you cut 140 pages, was it because you thought that material was no longer needed/relevant or because it needed no editing and one should simply reference the original? |

Basically - each of my LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION volumes have much updating and quite a few new items included - new items/new ways of doing some of the old items, etc. I had to make choices - removed a couple of items that I felt were no longer important when I needed the space for the much better new handlings/new versions. (I listened to/paid attention to quite a few magic friends who asked/suggested that I do just that). I do occasionally need to consider size/weight - because of mailing costs.
Also - and I've written about this before - I write better as time goes by. Teach better, and in MANY CASES WITH FEWER WORDS. I'm pleased to say that I've received literally thousands of testimonials over the decades, from all over the world, thanking me for "doing" the CLASSIC COLLECTION volumes. And interestingly, many of those testimonials from people who have the originals! Some of the few removed items obviously had many more words/sentences/paragraphs than the new handlings/versions. I REALLY NEVER BOTHERED TO COUNT! Wasn't important - nowhere near as important as giving the purchasers of those volumes MUCH MORE THAN THEIR MONEY'S WORTH. THAT is, always has been, my objective - not the number of pages! So, if you want to take the time to count words/pages/sentences/paragraphs as Poof-Daddy did/does, that's your call. I would suggest that you learn the updated/new items rather than waste your time counting. Oh - and e-books have nothing to do with anything - they are always exactly the same as the "regular" books - at least that's the way I wanted Conjuring Arts to do 'em. I sure don't want anyone "editing" my stuff - or counting pages!

Harry,
I think your answer, "Yes," to the question as to whether or not there were any deletions was sufficient. It just adds to the knowledge of what went into the revisions. (I own, and cherish, all of your Classic Collection volumes, except volume 4, which I hope to obtain in the near future.) |

Are anything left in either Apocalypse series (looking for 1 and 3) or in the Best of Friends series (looking for 2 and 3)?
