Hello. I am trying to learn the razorblades effect from paul pottasys book the magic of paul pottasy. I have a few problems. First of I used to cut myself doing this well it was more the blades scraping aginst my teeth meat. And in the book he explains the razorblade eating whith the same method of "tounging a lit cigarette" what does that mean. Another problem is that I cannot open my mouth to show it apperently empty becuse my mouth is to small and the blades flash even if I push the ALL the way back in to my chin. I cannot speak whith the blades in my mouth Paul does but I can work around this it would be njce though to be able to speak just to convince the audience my mouth is empty. And the preapered blades tangle I wrap the preapered blades in my hand by wrapping the thread around each blade and stacking them on top of eachother I did not understand the description in the book. Are there any recomended methods of setting the blades up whitout the gimmick using a less compl8cated method? I have heard that there is a description in I belive a bruce eliot book.

I have the Potassy Book as well.
What you need is the Kovari Razor Blade Trick, you are doing it all wrong, and you will hurt yourself. Buy the Kovari Razor Blade Trick here: Scroll down the page. http://kovarimagic.com/catalogus.html If he is still selling the same blades, you will receive the blades with holes in them like the book shows. That is a German style Razor Blade, many professional use them. His instructions will tell you everything you need to know on setting the props up. |

I have not been able to get on the Kovari website for a few days and he has not answered e-mail in the same and he usually answers very quickly. Anyone know if it's a technical issue or something else? below is the response I get when I go to it.

Kovari, is very old by this time. Many years ago, maybe over 10 or 20 years, the family took over the manufacture and selling of George's props. Never heard any comments since about George Kovari.
George Kovari also made arrangements with an American dealer in the U.S. to store and sell his pops. Again, I cannot find the U.S. website. There is a number of reasons why the web page is down, and none of them is good. Server crash, non-payment of web services, non-payment of the Kovari name. All you can do is try again at a later time. About responses to emails, if you have inquired previously and then not purchased, I can see why a magic manufacturer would not respond. They gave you information and then did not receive an order from you. They have wasted valuable time that could have been put on productive issues. Also, if the questions involved the working, making or secret in any way, the most polite thing to do would be, to just not respond. I have met George Kovari at several magic conventions over the years, always purchased his products, and enjoyed his creative thinking. |

He has contacted me to say there was a problem but it is now working but I still can't access it, keeps giving me the same error and I have tried several different computers. I have bought several items directly from him over the years so I know his non response for a few days was not because I was bugging him.
Can anyone here get on his website? |

Just tried, received a 404 error message. This means there is still something wrong with his website.
I find it interesting that the picture online of George Kovari is not the George Kovari I have met over the years at magic conventions. Is there a George Kovari Junior, Senior, or 1st, 2nd, 3rd, type situation here? |

I don't know if George Sr. (the Great George Kovari founder of Kovari magic and brilliant magical inventor and builder) is still alive. I understand that his son George Jr. died in February of last year (he was only 45). It maybe that the Kovari magic business is no more. George Sr. Had a daughter Eve but I don't know if she was interested in magic or participated in the Kovari magic business.
The Potassy method of performing the Razor Blade trick is not the best available. I suggest you search the literature just a bit more and see what better works for you. When I say works I do mean "safely". There is no reason to be cutting the inside of your mouth (or anything else) doing this trick. I don't think you need to save up money to afford a safe method for performing the illusion. Heck Tim Ellis' version, "Ultimate Blades" is only $10.00 USD on Vanishing. There are other methods and booklets out there, easily available and inexpensive. John Booth's great book "Marvels of Mystery has a chapter on the trick (and the needle trick) how to tie, switch, and safely present the illusion. That book dates back to 1944 or so and is a treasure trove of magic. To answer your question in your first post, yes there is a description of the methodology and routine in Elliott's "Classic Secrets of Magic". It is Lee Noble's handling. Dan Harlan has a download on the Needle and Razor blade routines in his Tarbell series (Tarbell nu. 48 I believe). It costs about $20.00 USD. That is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to inexpensive teaching aides and or the routine. I think a little homework is in order. Find the methodology that suits you then invest the time in mastering an entertaining routine. Sticking razor blades in your mouth and pulling the out tied is about as entertaining as watching grass grow. Frankly if you are just trying to gross out or shock your friends you'd be better off learning the Balloon Swallowing Stunt or even spent some time learning a mouth coil routine. They are both more fun but as gross. They also have the added advantage of being less dangerous should you become sloppy or inattentive to what you are doing (happens more than one wants to think about).

Having read the original post I agree with Bill as you are doing it wrong & will hurt yourself
I have used Pauls method for many years & now do a combination of his routine & Tim Ellis Ultimate Razorblades which suits the corporate market I work in. Check out Tims routine its fabulous & explains all the safety you need & is visually spectacular. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iqZvPvVpL0 |

If you are having issues due to the size of your mouth have you thought of looking at needle routines. I can recoumend Dave Spill routines and Wayne Houchin single needle.
Just pointing it out!
Enjoy your magic,

One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.
