The 19th-century corporation stalls inside Bath Abbey were recently removed in advance of vital repair and stabilisation work to the Abbey’s collapsing floor.
Below the platform which housed the stalls a few interesting artefacts have been discovered. However, what no one had expected to find were two coins, found within days of each other, depicting a devil and bearing the legend CIVITAS DIABOLI on one side and, on the reverse, 13 MAJ ANHOLT 1973. Naturally, these coins piqued the interest of the team and further research has revealed the strange story of a Danish eccentric who perpetrated an elaborate 40-year long hoax which was only unmasked almost a decade after his death. Fascinating article written by a good friend of mine. https://www.wessexarch.co.uk/news/hoax-s......th-abbey My friend has no interest in bizarre magic and has no idea how this has got the cogs of my brain whirring....If only I could get my hands on a few of these coins what fun I could have with him!?..... |

There was a man with the patience to play a trick. He made his moves, then let decades go by. Truly a master of the prank. My hat is off to him.

Some of our "news" papers have picked up on this and cobbled together their usual misinformed bilge Ironically it is in part a story about the gullibility of journalists. For a sober version there’s a piece in the Guardian.

I recently got to be a guest host for an episode of a podcast on Satanism. In this episode, in addition to the Nail Gaiman & Terry Pratchett book Good Omens, we all talked about thsese Satanic coins in the Satanic News segment. Getting the word about bizarre magic out there, give it a listen:
