I have been learning to roll backwards after seeing a guy do it at my local magic meeting. I asked him how he does it, but he said he just does it. It inspired me to go home and learn it. I searched for tips, but didn't find much. After a month of steady practice, I've got it to the point where I can do it consistently.
I roll the coin forward till I get to the pinky, then roll backwards until I have it between the thumb and index finger. This is like thumb palm, but it's out more from the crotch of the thumb. I go back and forth like this, it looks cool. I have noticed two key tips to make it work. The first one is when you roll the coin between the third and pinky, you can only pinch one quarter of it. Three quarters is sticking up. You need this much to be able to reverse the roll. Sometimes more of the coin ends up pinched. If this happens, just drop it down to the thumb and do the standard roll. Then you bring it back to the index finger and start over. Nobody knows you messed up, it just looks like you are mixing things up. The second tip is to bring the thumb into place alongside the index finger, so you're ready to catch it when it rolls over. This is where I drop it most of the time. Once I get it a few times, I get into a rhythm and it goes back and forth. Right now, it will only work in my left hand, which oddly is my nondominant hand. Anybody have any tips to add? |

I remember it being done, when I was a teenager. I "played" with it for awhile, but preferred the (to me) "flowing motion" of the "original" coin roll.
The only "variation" of the roll, that I did, was the four coin roll, motivated by Walter Gibson's "Shadow" story, which I mentioned above in this thread. I wish that I had a tape (?) of "my" 4 coin roll!

It's all just practice, as you have found out from doing it frontwards. It just takes you to see someone doing it in other ways and off your mind and hands go to figure it out. It's really just about letting the hands get some routine into doing what you want them to do, and in time they will usually do it.
I've been coin rolling a long time, forwards & then backwards, both hands. It's rather easy to do both hands when you get the balance down. the weaker hand simply mirrors the dominant hand in most cases but it looks even more stupendous to people. After a while, you even learn to do things off the move, as I have a little vanish sequence I like to do off it. For me, I just use coin rolling sparingly, as a lot of times people can gratuitously over do it. I remember when I was learning the Murphy Deck Flip...at first it was a bit challenging, but after some practice it's about as easy as the coin roll really. And I even came to figure out on my own how to do the nifty little move backwards (which I don't see people do a lot, if at all). So, as with the coin roll, the deck flip got better and more creative behind the strongest ingredient in any good magic, good old "Practice." Just keep after it!

If you want to roll the coin back and forth you need to roll it forward and stop before you transfer it to the pinky, just let it touch the pinky without completing the roll, and pull it back with the middle finger.
If you want to roll it backwards over and over without rolling it forward, start by moving it under your fingers with the thumb and pulling it through the pinky and third finger. Practice with both hands, as it will save you time in the future when you decide you want to learn the backward roll with your weak hand as well. I begun practicing the backward coin roll after seeing Kainoa Harbottle doing it in a DVD with Curtis Kam. Here's a move I came up with that uses the backward roll: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz_l9Nlwy8g Been doing this quick little move for about 10 years now |

Daniel, I really like your vanish. Dick. I wish they had video when you were doing your four coin roll. I bet it was spectacular. MB, now I have to go look up Murphy deck flip. I really enjoy stimulating conversation on a topic that interests me. I've had more fun playing with coins than anything I can remember.
