This not a new idea, but I'd thought I'd share it. I wanted this Sunday morning to do a one person/two puppet prerecorded puppet routine I purchased earlier from Creative Ministry Solutions. But I have no small portable puppet stage, especially one where I can operate both puppets and follow the script at the same time unseen. I also did not want to set up a large normal puppet stage as my "performing" area is very small with bad sight lines.
At my local "Field and Stream" store in Kalamazoo (also on their web site), they sell a Field & Stream PC Privacy 1 Person tent for $59.99. Very small, stand up tent. You can anchor it to a floor using two five foot boards with eye hooks. The I hung from the interior side straps inside the tent a small expandable curtain rod. Hang from the rod a fabric that you can see through, but someone looking at you cannot see through. I obtained a highly decorated brocaded gold and black fabric from Fields Fabric in Kalamazoo- just perfect. Even though the stagey looking fabric is right in front of my face, I can see through it out toward the audience (and see the puppets I'm operating) but the audience cannot see back through it in the direction of my face. I then lined up the front of the tent to where I will be sitting (on a small folding stool) in the tent with a Walmart adjustable reading stand in front of me- this stand also holds my elbows/weight of my arms with the puppets on them while I can still look down and follow along with the puppet script. Finally I cut out a rectangle in the front of the tent for the "stage" area, and surrounded the hole with gold Duck tape. Then simply hang the see thru cloth from the curtain rod inside the middle of the tent, and it's all set. I sit behind the cloth, the puppets are displayed in front of it of course with my arms going underneath the hanging cloth from the middle of the tent. I placed my portable CD player and small speaker on the interior pedestal table as well, the sound goes easily through the tent wall. I can now play the CD recorded script, operate both puppets, and follow along with the script sight unseen to the kids sitting right in front of me. Inexpensive way to get into puppet ministry without a ton of equipment and other puppet operators/helpers needed. |

I hope to see some of you next week at the FCM convention in Indianapolis- I will be there Monday only due to my office/Court schedule. www.FCM.org Fired up!, can't wait to be there if only for one short day.

Roger,
Great puppet stage idea! I wish I was going to be at the Convention -- it's only an hour away from where I live. However, I was booked way in advance for our State's Kids Camp the same week. Have a great time! |
