Hi folks,
Currently on holiday in Spain at the moment and it got me thinking while having dinner with such a diverse number of European languages... "What tricks work best for walkaround when language is a barrier?" I immediately thought that the tricks need to be visual and of course self explanatory. This got me thinking along the lines of tricks with elastic bands.. Such as crazy mans handcuffs and work that isn't hindered by high humidity so playing cards are out to degree. Rubix cube effects would also go over well as would cups and balls and miniature linking rings and rope tricks. So what would you guys add to your walk around magic in a foreign land? Nic |

Card tricks are fine as long as simple-instructions can be gestured. "Pick a card" is universal.

Ah but in High humidity the playing cards don't stand a chance... Unless it's something like 3 Card Monte.
I recall s performer in Cuba years ago doing a Monte routine with dominoes.. Double 1... This seemed unhindered by the humidity and I believe the trick needed to be done opposite the spectator so it was ok at a table where they come to you.. This way you can cover the bad angles. Please keep your suggestions coming... I am sure others will appreciate them as much as I do. Nic |

Learn how to say "Like this" in your target language. That phrase, plus pantomime (eg: saying "Like this" when mimicking the shuffling of cards) got me through most language barrier issues in Korea. It's practically a linguistic Swiss Army Knife, and you'll find it replaces so many common phrases that you'll be able to spend a lot more time memorizing translations to "No, the clean hand!" and "It's from a Dusty Woofle." and other celebrated classics.

To me magic, overall, transcends language. Try to make your gestures noticeable.
