I use rubber bands to wrap around some of my props inside my roll-on case. As we all know that the hot weather can break the rubber down and that makes them break easily.
I found rubber bands that are made for cooking in the oven --up to 600F or 350C. I FOUND THEM IN THE Home Sense Kitchen Store. They're great for bundles Business Cards. Tricky Ricky |

Thanks for sharing! I didn't know such things existed. I'm sure I'll use them for something some day.Llike this, yes? https://www.amazon.com/Architec-Stretch-......00RODBZK That's about 30 cents each. Pretty good if they'll last pretty much forever.
Also found these "stretchy strings" made for the oven. https://www.amazon.com/Rotisserie-Elasti......07K8ITDA Maybe if you need something bigger. They aren't really like rubber bands, though.

Another problem with (at least some) rubber bands is that they rot with age, and can damage the props they're holding. Years ago I made up a set of cards for Barrie Richardson's Perchance To Dream, and wrapped a rubber band around them for storage. The band rotted and ruined the cards! Now when I use rubber bands to keep things together I first put a paper wrapper around the obects.

260Q Balloons will work in a pinch. Either the whole balloon to wrap it. Or cut the nozzle for a tight elastic. It will lose Its elastivity... love the oven version !!

Thanks Ricky. I've discovered tricks that I have stored away with rubber bands - the bands have disintegrated and stuck to the prop. The birthday banner is one of these. I now use the pony tail holder things - they're elastic, but the outside is some kind of cloth. I use them a lot now. You can get them at a drug store in the hair care section.

My only experience with the thick bands, found on food products, was for a business card stack for OTL. The thickness works well.

One way to keep your rubber bands lasting a little longer is to, put them in a self sealing freezer bag, and put some Fanning Powder in with them. For some reason, of which I don't know why, the bands do not rot as fast. sure you have to dust them off, when removing, but they will still work.
I worked for a factory that kept all their rubber parts, coated with a white powder much like fanning powder. So I believe some of the same ingredients in Fanning Powder were in what they used. Felt the same creamy powder mixture. I switched much of my gimmicks that use rubber-bands to ladies hair bands, with the covered rubber. It works the same for what my needs, and they come in all different sizes as well. |
