Glad this thread popped up, I just purchased "Institutes" and having never seen his material before, I'm very pleased! 'The Drop' is an excellent move and I'm really glad to have started learning it.
There are tons of videos as well, which is super helpful.

Thanks for the tip! I've signed up for the list.
The Drop is great, I've gotten fairly comfortable with the basic move in the last couple weeks. It's not terribly hard and as you say it's very versatile. Jeremiah seems like the kind of guy that would be fun to just hang out with too, he has that mellow friendly energy.

Congratulations to Jeremiah Zuo on the great review for his book “Institutes of a Coin Magic Fan” in the November 2019 issue of Genii Magazine. I was going to pick some quotes to use but the whole thing is so well written by Francis Menotti I couldn’t choose! Make sure to check out Genii online or hardcopy. Btw the card book mentioned in the review is also now available as well! Either OR both are available directly from Jeremiah at https://www.jeremiahzuo.com/…/institut......agic-fan

Yes I also appreciate the Drop. I have only just started using it from the book. But it is so versatile because it is easy to perform.
You can easily add some touches or moves of your own to it if you wish. Very rare for what should be a very difficult move . |

I now have second thoughts about this book. The main move is the Drop.
This move has been puffed up way beyond what it is. The problem is some moves look ok on film, but not good close up. IMHO, that is the drop. The move by Pierric, in his Penguin live lecture blows this away. Pierric, in his lecture, is obviously a coin master. He is no joke. Contest winner as well. It looks great both on video and close up. You may disagree with me but this is going to the back of the drawer. Regret getting it. I feel like I was a sucker of MC marketing. I have to get things I can use as a pro, not just that titillate me for a while until I or other people figure out something is off. |

Bill Malone on Jeremiah's "The Drop" and coin work (excerpt from the booklet): "Bill Malone once invited me to a session as a "coin guy." Bill is kind and would have invited me anyway, but the way he chose to frame the invitation was, "We need a coin guy." It seems bragadocious to say ... but here I go (after all, I am a nobody, who is going to read this anyway?): during the course of the evening Bill gave me the highest compliment that I have ever received in magic. He told me the that best, most fooling, and most natural looking coin magic that he had ever witnessed was performed by Gary Kurtz and Geoff Latta. He then said that the work I did that night was on the same level."
"This is the best collection of effective and intelligent coin magic you’ll ever see from a guy who refuses to call himself a coin magician. Take this home, learn Jeremiah’s secrets, and show him something that’ll convince him he’s actually really good at this.” - Curtis Kam "That ‘No Touch Coins Coins Across’ is absolute perfection. Jeremiah, you are a deliciously evil thinker- that is so evident just from the short clips I’ve seen." - Jack Carpenter Review by Francis Menotti from the November 2019 Genii Magazine : Institutes of a Coin Magic Fan Jeremiah Zuo $25 It can be dangerously easy to become complacent when it comes to coin sleights, or to assume that there really isn’t anything new in the world of prestidigitation. Such may it be when the knowledgeable coin worker first sees the work of Jeremiah Zuo or the information he imparts in his manuscript, Institutes of a Coin Magic Fan. Or perhaps, the amateur coin magician will see one of the videos accompanying this manuscript and assess that Zuo is exceptionally skilled at the notoriously knacky Himber Vanish. He may well be, but that’s not what this book is about. Zuo, exceedingly humble in both his writings and his videos, is a self-proclaimed card guy. In his introduction to this manuscript he calls it a sequel to his book that has yet to come out. That is, through whatever circumstances, his treatise on his claim-to-fame coin move has found its way into print before whatever card material he is aspiring to release. At first glance, this is a short but full treatise—a mini workshop in print form—around a single move. Predominantly a vanish, the move he calls the Drop has a number of applications and variations that Zuo takes sufficient time and word-count to describe and illustrate quite clearly. In the understandably effusive foreword, Tom Dobrowolski recommends that the reader preemptively views the sequence of online videos before delving into the how-to text. This is an excellent recommendation that I can whole-heartedly second, as seeing the move in action before understanding its workings and nuances will give the reader a more full appreciation for its potential and effectiveness. Though perhaps an addendum: it’s not necessary to watch all of the videos up front, but just enough to get an idea of what the move should look like before one reads its description with any skepticism. So what is it? It is a utility move that can function as a vanish, but also as a color change, Shuttle Pass, or false count. The sleight works best, according to Zuo, with a halfdollar or dollar-sized coin; anything smaller and the visual nature of the falling coin diminishes in effectiveness. It bears an aesthetic resemblance to the Himber Vanish, but with a feel of Al Goshman and Slydini mixed in. The vanish looks, done correctly, as though the coin is simply slid, plummeting over the first finger of one hand and caught in a closing fist of the other. The beauty of Zuo’s Drop is that there is no fidgety clean-up or readjustment in order to repeat the move or go directly into a Ramsay Subtlety or other similar concealment. As clean and effective as the Drop is as a vanish, its usefulness excels when it is applied as a Shuttle Pass either to switch one coin for another or to effect an alarming mid-air transformation from a standard-sized to jumbo coin. Moving ahead through the manuscript (and videos) in difficulty level, adding another coin to the mix awards the performer the ability to work a remarkably deceptive Click Pass that can then, without too much difficulty, be converted into a false count of truly as many coins as one desires. Upon reading the description and watching the videos, it opens up possibilities of tricks requiring one-ahead or onebehind techniques to cause appearances and vanishes in much less cramped fashion than using other methods. In his videos, Zuo claims that steady practice of the technique will allow for most people to be able to achieve a decent version of the Drop in a couple of days to a week. Truly, if semi-accomplished coin worker begins practicing the technique as soon as they read its description, they can have it somewhat functional—if not performable—by the time one has finished reading the manuscript. That said, a great deal more time will be necessary to master the advanced variations such as the Click Pass and false counts. Once the muscle memory of the Drop’s action kicks in, it is quite a satisfying accomplishment. After the instructional write-ups of the move and its variations, Zuo includes a short series of example effects utilizing the sleight. His “No-Touch Coins Across” and “Reframing Three-Fly” are of particular note for their structure and visual effectiveness, plus each have their moments of enjoyable misdirective moments that, while may be more amusing to magicians than to lay-audiences, appear to be startling and effective. Zuo rounds out the manuscript with two “Wild Coin” plots, both of which are a little more complicated choreographically and a bit more challenging, sleight-wise. But nothing in the manuscript should make the average to advanced coin worker crumple into tears, and the effort to learn these well-constructed routines would suit them well. As mentioned at the beginning, Zuo has included a link to a password-protected Vimeo page where one can find a series of rough/lower quality videos of Zuo teaching the main Drop and performing some of the effects. It should be noted that the image quality, lighting, and crispness of these are less than desirable for a professional product. But as they are included almost as a nice-to-have afterthought to the manuscript, it’s hard to be too critical of them. Still, it might be nice to see Zuo eventually add some cleaner (and slower performances) of the material, if for no other reason than to show them in the quality that the sleight and routines deserve. Zuo claims to be a card guy, and this is his sequel to the as yet unreleased card work. If said next prequel is anywhere near as meticulously written and adeptly illustrated— he does his own illustrations, too—it will be as welcome addition to the card magicians’ libraries as this should be to coin magicians. Definitely worth a look. Institutes of a Coin Magic Fan • Jeremiah Zuo • Illustrations • 8.5”x11” • PDF and paperback • 47 pages • $25 • www.jeremiahzuo.com/product-page/institu......agic-fan |

I just asked John Jurney about you guys just the other day and here you are...
Congrats to Jeremiah! It's no say feat to out-do Kanoia Harbottle in coin magic. But it really is a wonderful trick and coin book. So happy that it has been so highly recognized out there. Keep up the great work! And Tom, I remember a moment I had with Bill Malone long ago in Boca Raton, and he is a wonderful guy and fantastic magician. And to be asked by him to participate as a "coin man" in his get-together, and then to receive such praise, well, that is to have succeeded in my book. Good job! And man, there's a whole lot of good magic out the Chicago way...You, Jeremiah and John Jurney, man, that's a lot of good magic in one place, all from the same magic club. Happy it's filtering out to us all and everywhere.

Jeremiah Zuo Penguin Live Lecture September 27 From Jeremiah Zuo's email: "I am excited to announce that my first Penguin Live lecture is going to be released at the end of this month! https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/14242 If there is one question that I have consistently gotten since I started selling my wares to the wider world it is: do you have a DVD of your coin work? I like writing and illustrating, so that was what I stuck with. But I recognize that some people would much rather learn on video. I myself LOVE watching magicians on video. There is a great deal of benefit to seeing creators perform and discuss their material. I doubly felt the loss of not providing true video instruction when it came to The Institutes, because it was stuff I really wanted people to see. So when Penguin asked me to do a lecture, I said, "Sure! And you know what, I will do an all coin lecture! This will be a chance for those who have wanted to see The Drop in action and have video teaching to get it." I love the Penguin Lecture series, they are honestly my favorite online lectures, so I was excited at the opportunity to participate. We ended up shooting an over 2 hour coin lecture. I perform and explain a lot of material out of the book, as well as new routines that are not in the book. This is also a chance to hear me talk a bit more about theory, angles, extra tips, and other things that did not make the written description. Penguin was a blast to work with and I look forward to seeing the final product myself. The lecture will go for $39.95, but if you pre-order before the 27th you save $10! So head on over and take a look. https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/14242" |

Looks like great stuff. 9 or 10 routines covered, but his "Drop" move" is worth the price of admission...Just brilliant to watch, and a new, modern coin move really worth learning and doing...
"The Drop - A move that has become the foundation of Jeremiah's coin magic and the most popular thing that he does. The basic technique is natural, casual, versatile, and fooling. It serves as the father of a whole family of fooling techniques including shuttlepasses, changes, various click passes, and false counts." And look, I'm a decent-at-best coin guy, but there's something about Zuo, a guy that doesn't even consider himself a coin guy, that's just really special, magically amazing and just new-wave interesting. 😊 *Highly Recommended: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I purchased the penguin live recently and have been blown away by the versatility of the 'the drop' move. I've started to learn the move and it seems quite straight forward (1 coin) but I have a question that I'd like to ask someone about the technique (2 coins). Would anyone who has the move perfected be open to a question by PM please?
