I know a lot of magicians use pets in their show. But who have their pets trained to do a trick? For example have her/his rabbit find a card. Another example is have her/his bird fly back. I was thinking about training my pet/s to do a trick.
I like how Tricky Ricky has his rabbit trained to let go of a magic wand behind his back. |

The secret to pet tricks with rabbits, guinea pigs and parrots (the ones I have had experience with) is to simply observe their natural behaviors and then let them train YOU into reacting to those behaviors as if you had taught it to them. You might be able to get a rabbit to take a metal magic wand in its mouth for a moment or two, but it's natural instinct is to drop it since it's not good for eating or anything else a rabbit might be interested in. Just be prepared to turn away just before you know it will drop it, and presto! The rabbit has trained you to do a trick! Other animals have similar quirks, but you have to work with them to let you learn what you can do with their habits to make them look like training.

Many years ago I seem to recall that magician Hal Diamond had a rabbit that would run around him as he was on the stage floor. As he turned over one way or the other, this rabbit kept running around him. I thought that was pretty entertaining and so did the audience.

Brenda (formerly of Bob Brown and Brenda) used to take her dog Rocky to shows and he did tricks.
One time I subbed for Brenda on a show where Rocky's tricks had been the selling point so I agreed to take Rocky and do that part of Brenda's act. I did the tricks out of order and Rocky gave me such a look before doing the trick I asked for. (I hope he didn't tell Brenda.) By the Way, Rocky was a BIG hit doing simple tricks. -Mary Mowder |

This reminds me of the time my Wife and I traveled with Ken Griffin- He had two guinea pigs(for a switch effect) they were both the same size at the beginning of the tour- by the end of the tour - one was twice the size(we thought both were males??)-L-O-L

After I produce my dove I have it wave to the kids and high five them.
Then I tell the bird to sit stay. That gets a laugh. Them I say roll over and turn him over then I say play dead and he plays on my hand upside down. I been doing this for 6 yrs. Gets good reactions and no in depth training |

I purchase the book "Cottontail Capers." I just received it in the mail today. It explains how to train a rabbit to do several things in a show.

After the production of my rabbit I put him in my top hat.
Then some patter and jokes. OK..........Skippy is going to do a trick. I put his carrier next to the top hat and say when I count to 3 everyone says JUMP. And he hops into the carrier and they clap. But really is because (I think) He wants to go home. Never taught him that he just normally does it.

I’ve seen a magician use his pet chinchillas in his show, drop one off his table and get bitten.

I don’t
I do let goats at petting zoo gigs get in on card tricks. They help find chosen cards.
