I have both vanishing and appearing metal canes that I think need a little oiling. I purchased machine oil (for sewing machines) Is there any special method to oiling them?

The only canes that need oil is the very old Walsh that come with ivory and silver color knobs, and the German models. The canes from Japan and China, do not have to be oiled, as most are color treated. The bronze ones should never be oiled.
The oil Walsh suggested is a machine shop oil, that evaporates and leaves a wax coating layer, to keep the spring steel from rusting. Seal in a plastic bag with zip lock for storage. Any rust spots have to be rubbed with oil, until the rust is removed. Never use an abrasive. Usually, only a very light coating is needed, as the oil will spoil any silks for your gloves if you wear them while handling the canes. After applying a thin coating of oil, it should be wiped off, if you are to use it in performance. Don't be surprised if it takes you a couple hours to remove the oil, uses lots of rags. You might want to get a wood dole stick and wrap some rag, or cut a slit in the end to make like a rifle cleaning rod, to clean the oil on the inside. |

Yeah I used sewing machine oil on the cane and I don't think it helped. It opens too long and tight and is very hard to close up again,

If you haven't oiled it yet, don't put the oil directly on the cane. Put a light coat of oil on a soft cloth and slide the cloth up and down the cane. Then use a clean cloth and do the same thing. First, it will put a nice light coat of oil on the cane. Second, you won't have to wipe off as much oil.

I should have waited a little longer to get advice. I oiled it already. I'm going to take Bill's advice and remove the oil as much as I can,
