If you are in the US, head to your local coin shop. Ask for the slicks. They will sell them to you at just over scrap price.

Agee with Mathew. I bought mine at a local coin shop. They had them in a coffee can. I picked the ones that looked similar and were in best shape. Same with walking liberties. The coin shop had no idea what the word soft meant. Took a moment to explain what I was looking for and they handed me the can.

Yeah, it's funny...I remember once going to a coin seller's market looking for coins, and for some reason I just thought they knew that magicians used their coins. They didn't have a clue as to much of any of it. They were just there to sell coins. No disrespect, but these folks look like they have been selling coins so long that they seem engaged in not much of anything else...just moving from one market to another selling coins...Almost like just walking the wheel, like in the old movie, "Midnight Express," or something like that.
But yeah, at a coin shop you can find soft Morgans usually easy enough, but they are often very worn and inconsistent looking like the kind my grandpa once gave to me long ago. If you want a good set, where the milling is still also pretty good, ask around for that here, some folks actually hand-work them themselves. Or you can check with craftsman, they usually have good ones but for a price. Better...Perhaps someone on the Café is willing to part with an old set. Sometimes you might even get a set with a matching ] like I did once.

I picked up some walking liberty's from a coin shop. The proprietor wanted to show me what was in the case at high dollar. I told him I was going to be using then for magic tricks so they didn't need to be graded.
Long story short, I bought my walkers for about $6 each, he also showed me a folding (tri-fold walker) and a shaved walker with shell... I picked both of those up for less than $50. |

I called a few stores in Los Angeles asking about them a couple months ago. A few basically said "what?, no we aren't interested in that." One dealer said that he reserves all of his stock for a prominent gaff maker in Southern California. So I went to ebay and found several Walking Libertys that came in a lot and mostly looked similar in wear and feel.

Look in your paper or on the net for a coin show. Many dealers from all over, and many carry worn coins. But get there early to get around the guys buying bulk silver! And sometimes you can get a card with a dealer who can hook you up when they get more stock.
