I did a search for this topic before I posted. I didn’t see anything but if it’s already been posted than please direct me to it. I have been practicing Danny Archer’s 1-100 bill switch for a bit now and really like it. I’ve been weighing the pros and cons of a no tip bill switch and really like the non-tip version better. I know there are lots of non-tip methods floating around but I was wondering what your preference in using or not using a “T.T.” to perform a bill switch.

I understand the non-thumb tip theory, but it just doesn't look as clean. Quite often our brothers do gimmickless versions of tricks that are "just as good!"..But when we're honest with ourselves (uh, oh)they seldom are.

Gkfreed,
I don't know if you have ever seen Archers bill switch. I have seen it performed by Danny in person and let me tell you, it is without question the best bill switch on the planet. Bar none. |

Check out Paul Chosse's method in the Ron Bauer series. No tip is used and it is the cleanest handling I have ever seen/performed!

Agreed (with Gallo, above) In addtion to a smooth-as-silk technique, Bauer (& Co.) offers some VERY interesting presentations.

David Regal has a nice one on his tape Vol 2 I think.

Thanks for the kind words Mike, Doug. There is another presentation here on the Café, if anyone is interested. Can't remember what it was called, but the thread is a year old probably, and is my preferred presentation in many situations. I'm sure a search will reveal all...

I say go with a tip. But that is because I personally think Kevin King's is one of the top switches. I use it all the time and blow people out of the water with it. I have done tip-less switches, and they are equally stunning to the spectator. I guess it depends on your confidence.

To clarify - what makes Paul Chosse's methods so good is not the switch itself (although that is good too) but is the environment/context in which the switch is performed. There is absolutely no heat on you when the switch is being done.
Paul's posts in the previous thread he mentioned are definitely worth looking for. My only problem is sorting through Paul's 1026 posts (at the time of this writing) to find a particular one.
Cheers,

The TT can help for routines where you find the bill embedded in an apple later. When used for the right reasons, it is a wonderful method.

I harken back to the days of Johnny Paul... he never used a TT and he always baffled all, including magicians. He was incredible with the switch and a torn bill.
He would borrow a bill and tear it up (having s'd it) and throw the pieces on the floor. Just then a guy with a broom and dustpan on a stick, would come by, sweep up the pieces and go out the door. Johnny would later produce the bill.. toss it on the bar and as the speckie reached for it the bill would dance across the bar, where Johnny would pick it up and hand it to the owner. You NEVER saw him set up, do the reel stuff, nuttin. Oh what magic he did.

The thread you are talking about is: "A $ change Routine Idea" it is in the "Food for Thought" forum, and is the thread that has the alternate presentation for the "Mis-made Bill/Hundred Dollar Bill Switch" I mentioned. Please understand, the routine I describe in this thread, which is a healthy four pages (my posts don't even begin until the second page, I think...), is very idiosyncratic. It may not be for you, since it completely character-driven. It was developed as a theatrical piece, and so it has to suit your character. It IS me, so looks quite good when I do it. Though it may not be for you, I believe that there are some principles in the presentation and the structure of the effect that are transferable. I was trying to overcome the basic problems inherent in any $100.00 bill switch presentation. Those problems, and my thought process in overcoming them, are described as the thread progresses. I was saving the routine for a book, but I'll probably never write one, so I posted here. I hope it is of some use to those of you who are searching for answers to some of the same questions I had/have regarding presentation and creating a magical experience for your audience. Best, PSC P.S. It IS a no TT switch, and the details of that switch and my other presentation (an Origami thing), along with Ron Bauer's superb contributions and thoughts from other magicians like Mike Powers, are all in the "Bar Bill Stunt", part of the Ron Bauer Private Studies Series. I have no affiliation with the company other than the fact that Ron and I are old friends, so I am not suggesting you run right out and buy it, or any of the other booklets. In fact, since I treasure, and do, all of the material in the series, I would just as soon that no one EVER bought any of them!

Having taken a day, not too long ago, to run out and buy the Bar Bill Stunt booklet, at the recommendation of a friend, I WOULD recommend that anyone who wants to learn a superb method and handling for this effect go out and do the same. It's more than well worth it's price.
On a side note, Sankey's ultimate bill switch kit is not a bad little $13 package either. The method is not new, but the props that come with it are useful for certain types of performers and certain types of bill switch routines... just a "tip" from a guy who bought it a while back, and gives it a "thumbs" up.
