Hey all! I've been thinking about my gospel magic, trying to get some sort of a program rolling. But, I have a question for those of you that create your own Christian routines:
Do you try to find a message in a trick or do you try to find a trick for your message? I happen to strongly believe in the latter. If there is a message I want to send, I'm going to work extra hard to find the right effect to send it through. It's got to be a message that I whole-heartedly agree with and advocate. However, if someone thinks "Hey, I really love thise trick, how can I spread the Word with it?" then their intentions are still good, but I think the message will suffer a bit. Maybe a trick is a better starting point as far as performance is concerned, but as far as a ministry, nothing should hold you from the message you're trying to send. Just a few thoughts. What's your opinion? |

I personally find a trick and then develop a message to go with it. If I find a trick that I like I begin to develop a gospel application to go with the trick and then purchase the effect. One reason I develop the gospel application around the trick is because so often the Lord changes the application with an effect that I am doing. Most of my effects have two or three different gospel applications tied to them and can be changed to conform to the type of show I am doing. I began doing the square circle based on the life of Job, having all that he ever needed then losing it all at the hands of satan. Because of his unwavering faith in God all was restored to him 2 times the original amount. Also with the square circle is that a church can be a beautiful building on the outside, and have beautiful things on the inside ie furniture and ornaments. Like us we can be beautiful on the outside wear nice clothes but real beauty comes from with in through Christ and by accepting him we are filled with beauty. There is one other but I won't keep rambling on and on. Each of these came after I purchased square circle. I have yet to find and effect that I cannot come up with a gospel application for. The bible is so full of things to share with people. Just my thoughts. Jim |

Wow, Andy, that's a tricky question!
I try to keep my show structured so it flows smoothly as a magic show, with peaks and climaxes, audience participation pieces, and some without. I have a show structure that I use, and certain tricks belong in certain spots, because of what they are, and the impact they carry. This is for both a regular show and a gospel show. However, I also want the messages in my gospel show to flow in a logical order, too. (I follow the 4 spiritual laws as my outline for the messages, in most cases). Often, I have to think about what magic works in this portion of my show, and what message also fits. I look at the whole of the show initially, rather than a trick or a message. I think that it is important to be comfortable performing the trick, and also be comfortable combining the message with it. For many years, even thought I was a Christian, I only did regular magic shows. I was aware of gospel magic, but chose not to do it. Why? The reason was that I didn't feel comfortable combining the message with the trick, although I was comfortable with the magic trick itself. Now I feel comfortable doing both gospel magic and regular magic. Just some further food for thought. - Donald.

I largely take an effect, and think about God.
I then pray for wisdom, and further think of how this effect can be used to illustrate or illuminate the wonderous nature of God, and His truths in The Word. Bible verses often then flow to front of my thinking, and the general application becomes clear. But then it takes a lot more prayer, and hard work, putting the actual routine and patter together. Then it evolves as I try it out on my friends and members of the local FCM. (My family has had enough of my magic, so I don't burden them anymore) That usually helps me refine it all, and then I practice a lot, and take it to the World. I am just now working on a routine for an effect whose rights I just bought, but don't want to put out without a Christian message option. I am following the above process (notice that I didn't say "Formula", as it never works in the same proportion, or predictable timeframe - so it is more of a process than a forumla) and hope to be taking some of the revised routines to the IBM International where I will give one free to each FCM member who asks me about it. And that will pretty much be Magic Café members.... BroDavid

I take a trick and then develop a message to go with it. After I have been practicing a trick for a while I get the feel for something that should go with it and then I do it. For instance, I have Gregory Wilson's CD entitled "On the Spot". THere is a trick in it called Quick Silver. I have been practicing this trick for about a month and just today I came up with a routine based upon one of Jesus' parables. I am going to work on the routine now. Yet, I am working on a routine for a wordless book type of show for the sponge balls. But usually I start the other way around

Andini,
I start with prayer. Later on I come to the message. Then I refer to Dariel Fitzkee's list of "nineteen basic effects" in his book, The Trick Brain. I pick out the effect or series of effects that will best deliver the message. Then I get to work creating a routine. Of course, I "bounce" my ideas off of pastors and Christian friends as I go. Lastly, I end with prayer. This works well for me. Of course, there are exceptions, but I use this process the majority of the time.

What a response! I like the idea astoundingbruce brought up. It takes a message and slowly turns it into a routine.
However, I also agree with Jim when he says, "The bible is so full of things to share with people." Knowing the many lessons and stories in the Bible, it probably won't be horribly difficult to fit a routine with its lesson. From these posts, it seems to me that having an effect that you're comfortable with and having an effect that's strong is almost as important as the message. A bad trick with a great message won't do a whole lot for you. I appreciate all of this feedback and I think I'm going to end up using a combination of both sides. Doing regular magic shows, I still read the normal magic publications and see a variety of ads. So, I'm still going to be getting new effects every so often that I'll think of gospel applications for. I also continue to read the Bible and learn and relearn stories and lessons that can be applied to effects. Thanks again, Andy |
