Hiya, Magi:
After building and discarding 5 prototypes, I finally had a satisfactory suitcase table. It went to a kid show at a local library and performed quite well -- then promptly disappeared from the back of my truck. So, after six prototypes, this is what I created: http://home.earthlink.net/~magicbystone/SUITCASE%20TABLE.htm PM for construction details, and PLEASE don't leave your new table in the back of your rig while you grab a cup of joe. !&%^# :0( Leland |

Leland,
Your table looks great. I'm impressed that you took the time to build one. Do you think that you saved money from buying one of the commercial versions? It looks like you spent a lot of time on this. By the way did I tell you about the new suitcase table I found in the back of a truck. Just kidding I'm sorry you had yours stolen. Are you going to make another one? |

Nice table, but how big and how heavy is it? (Would it fit in my car...or do I need a truck?)

Hiya, Magi:
Regan -- thanks! Louis -- 71cm high x 60cm wide x 30cm deep folded, 101cm high unfolded; about 12kg empty. And after my last "vanishing table" experience, it was redesigned to fit INSIDE the average vehicle!!! I've been a pro woodworker since '85, but anybody with basic skills & tools, a couple of spare weekends and a nearby Home Depot should be able to build an acceptable Suitcase Table. Leland |

Leland,
Table looks great. I was wondering, compared to a commercial version, how do you feel about the stability?

Hiya, Pik:
This was actually designed as a commercial product, and as such I believe it compares favourably to similar products by other manufacturers. The case itself doesn't rack (or deform diagonally) under normal usage, and that's a tough one to overcome when using lighter materials and no face frame. Part of the stability is due to the entire case being assembled with epoxy, staples, and unobtrusive bracing. Sincerely, Leland Edward Stone |

Is the wood regular ply or mdf?

Hiya, RJ:
The default panel choice in my shop is Baltic (or "Finnish") birch, an imported plywood that is simply unbeatable. 5'x5' panels of 1/2" stock in my area run about 20 bucks at the wholesale yards, more at Home Depot. Leland |

Where did you get the fabric and how did you attach it to the table?

Hiya, Magi:
Thomas: Yep, I've seen Home Depots here in So Cal stock Baltic Birch -- limited sizes and higher prices than the wholesale yards. James: The material is a trunk lining fabric sold by Keyston (not "Keystone"), and I believe they're a national upholstery supplies wholesaler. You might be able to find similar material at an auto upholstery shop in your area, or even at a fabric shop. The fabric's attached with spray adhesive, 3M or equivalent. You can buy aerosol cans of the stuff, but it's cheaper to buy in bulk and use your own spray rig -- I use an old paint gun no longer suitable for spraying lacquer. Leland Edward Stone |

Outstanding. Thanks for your willingness to share the tips and "tricks" (sorry) that make this rig a great one to build. Also sorry about the loss of 'No.5'. A pretty expensive loss, not to mention all the props inside... peace, phill

Leland,
Great job on the table. It not only looks great but is able to be used for your shows and must carry a lot. How much can you fit in it? Does it have a "servante"? John The Gospel Magic Man |
