I am wanting to make a nice larger version of the classic money maker, as a desktop curio, but am having difficulty finding the proper material to use on the rollers. It needs to be about 6" wide, non-fraying if it must be cut (can't hem it obviously), should be identical on both sides, and very thin, so as not cause a size-changing roller effect. Any help is welcome! Thanks!

Have you tried getting a naugahyde material or a oil cloth for a table? Most fabric stores or Wallmart should be able to do it.

Thanks Richard.
I scoured a Hancock Fabrics earlier today. I was hoping there was some kind of vinyl (Naugahyde or oil cloth) that would fit the bill, but all I have found has some form of backing. Felt is too thick, and most other materials fray when cut. I have thought about taking some flocked paper that I buy from an art supply store (I use it for BA and other uses), and put two pieces back to back with spray mount. I wonder if window blind fabric can be found in colors besides white, or is it possible to color it? Won't know til I test the ideas, I guess. Still looking...

An automotive or furniture upholstery shop should have a thin, non-fraying black material used for the underside of couches, chairs and car bench seats. I can't remember the exact name of th stuff but we used it so much we started calling it "mystery cloth."
If nothing else, these under-utilized supply sources have some surprising cloth choices for the weekend magic builder.

Great suggestion!!! I have to go look for some headliner material next week, so I can check then. I know the stuff you are talking about! If my online research just panned out, it's called nylon cambric. Thanks Dave!!!

Hey,no problem! Glad to help. Thanks for giving me the heads up on the actual name. Someday the roll I've got will give out and I'll need to replace it.

What if you put the two pieces together and use dry mount tissue in between? The combination of heat and pressure should make it almost like a thin laminate. Otherwise try the Scotch adhesive.

I am the poster child for prototypes. I'm sure I'll be trying all kinds of ideas in this quest for the best.

As an alternative, try obtaining some black Tyvek from a printer. This is the tear-resistant paper used in the USPS Priority Mail envelopes (the bag style) and is virtually indestrictable as well as very thin...

Sleightly (ajp),
A friend suggested Tyvek. I am familiar with the home construction product, but not the other. From a printer, huh? Would this be a large printing firm or any copy/print place? I'll PM you in the event you don't see this post. Thanks!

Try going to a sign maker or look for a sign making materials source. Tyvek would should work well for this.

Michael,
Have you tried blackout window shades cut into strips? They even come in colors from that famous magic shop: Walmart! Scheme! Bob Magic By Sander |
