I picked up a vintage educated duck today at a flea market. Paint a little chippy and the bill doesn't hold the card (whatever was there is now missing).
What do I use inside the bill to grip the card? Felt? Rubber? Does it go on upper and lower bill? Also, since this is a vintage piece, should I repaint at all? Thanks in advance. |

Use little rubber pads. You can find them in the hardware store and cut them to size (if needed). Try to find the self-adhesive type usually in the section with footpads for furniture and such.
If you choose to repaint it, you must have excellent painting skills in order to bring it back to the original quality (for collectors reasons) if you just want to actually use it, which is cool, then just do the best you can using high quality spray paint and lots of sanding up to 400 grit. Sand it all down first, using 220 grit, and then fill any nicks with automotive "spot putty". Then prime with a white primer, sand w/ 320 grit, prime one more coat, sand w/ 400 grit. Use a Tack Cloth and wipe dust. Clean up painting area, and paint you final enamel paint (Rustoleum) using overlapping smooth strokes across keeping the paint "wet" which means just slow enough to keep the finish smooth and not "dusty". Make sure to take detailed patterns of the graphics, as well as photos, and then you can cut them out using Sign Vinyl and transfer them on w/ transfer tape. Or you may choose to make stencils and spray them on. I would mask the beak area and just spray it. That is my "quick tip" crash course. Hope it helps! Chance

It sure does help!
I don't know if I'll repaint, but these tips will come in handy for some project, so into my files they go. Gee, I really like this place! |

When I picked up my Gwendolyn 30 some years ago, I felt that the card pick up was not reliable enough. I placed a small dab of silicone sealant on the bottom jaw only. This is the jaw that actually picks up the cards from the deck. It has worked flawlessly ever since.

Be sure to fix the duck correctly so it don't quack up on you. Don,
