All things considered, I am thinking of going GPS, yes it is expensive but it's a once only expense. Not necessarily true ... many GPS systems have an update that must be purchased every few years. Some can be obtained free from online downloads, but many systems -- particularly advanced mapping navigation systems with voice guidance -- require a CD that runs $100-$200 every couple years. |

I purchased a Magellan GPS this past year and it is one of the best investments I have made! It is so much better then any online mapping! The night before you punch in all the adresses you need for the next day and you are good to go! This has free downloads from the website to update it (which you should only have to do like every 2 years) you can also get a subscription to traffic watch and it will automatically detect traffic problems and reroute you!
I would definitely skip getting 2 or 3 of the latest and greatest tricks this year and invest in a GPS! Greg

I have a GPS system, mainly so I can find my car again when I'm in the outback, but I do sometimes use it for venue location.
If you buy one, be prepared to suffer from techno-shock. As soon as you buy it, it will be out-of-date and you will want the next fancy model. As soon as I bought mine, colour screens came in. Then "visual directions" (turn left 200 feet). Then audio directions, etc., etc. Nicholas - the Navman series are quite good for street navigation. About 3-400 I think Timothy |

Yeah, but Google doesn't help much at three in the morning when you hit road costruction and you're in an unfamiliar area.

But their stuff can be printed out beforehand, as far as directions go.
Also, with all of the capabilities of cell phones, PDAs and laptops, I'm sure there are some folks who can jump on Google from their car at 3 am. Also, generally speaking, you're not going to be lost in the middle of the night on an unnamed road. You'll have a general idea of where you are and where you need to be. This is about directions, not about the worst-case scenario. Kevin

Trust me, the most unexpected things can and will happen. The worst-case scenario is what we need to prepare for. Google doesn't know road construction. Google doesn't know when and where accidents that close roads will happen. Google can't foresee a road closed due to snow.
I was once on my way to a 4 a.m. show, my third show for the night which started at 9 p.m. the previous evening, criss-crossing the state. When I arrived at the venue whose address was on the contract, I was shocked to find that the buyer had put down the addresss of his place of business, and NOT the show address! Try asking for directions at 4 a.m. in a small town that rolls up the sidewalks at 9. The funny thing was the address given was the police station, and it was locked up tighter than a drum (think Mayberry.) I knew the show was at a school, and despite having a cell phone (I called his home, of course he was at the show location, and he only gave me his WORK number!) I could not find the place! I eventually did, but was very late -- no fault of mine, but still not something I wanted to have happen. Last night, I had a 3 a.m. show, an 8 hour drive from my home. My GPS guided me right to the door with verbal instructions. Had I owned that several years ago and been faced with a wrong address, I could have simply keyed in "SCHOOLS" and it would have found all the area schools within a few seconds. That night, the Google map that I printed out beforehand using a wrong address would have been no help. |

Of course scenarios like that can't be planned for. But I'm sure the story you just gave doesn't happen for most of your shows.
Also, Google does have a service, provided your cell phone will work with it, where you can do just what you described, type in a keyword (schools, pizza, pharmacy) and the zip code you're in, and it will tell you. Kevin
