So here's some work of mine on the coin and pen plot. Enjoy, and let me know what you think.

Yeah this is the type of magic I really enjoy watching at the moment actually. Very laid back, very natural, great effects and a nice dose of fun/personality thrown in for good measure. I LOVE that vanish with the pen tapping the coin, is that yours or is it available in print somewhere?

It's a variation of David Williamson's strike vanish of my own invention (as far as I know). He does a similar style (with the coin at the fingertips) in his Penguin lecture, but I added one small thing.

Often I would rather watch magic like this than "which hand holds the copper coin and which holds the silver?"
"Fun"is the perfect word to describe it...good going, SmileAndNod.
To see a difficult thing lightly handled gives the impression of the impossible.

Certainly fun and skillful and even intriguing -- good job. I don't find it very magical but not a criticism. Might be a bit different in person.
These days, who wants to experience magic anyway?

I find it difficult to find anything on a video to be magical in the sense of creating a "story told after" of awe and wonder with no need to seek an explanation.
A live performance is about engaging the audience and preparing them to expect magic to occur, sustaining their attention and having them like you (appreciate?) any long series of rapid effects come across as a skill demonstration, or "I can do something you cannot." (for me). However, I am not sure this is not what today's audience will prefer as entertainment -- having little experience with awe and wonder in their personal life (or imagination either). On the plus side, if you can get an audience with close attention, appreciation of magic as art and open to affect as well as effect -- you can change their lives. All it takes is a single effect -- though several may be required to set the conditions. You are doing great! All of this practice until the moves and sleights are automatic. Then someday you can "automatically" choose the one appropriate to the "moment." Just an old fart speaking. All YouTube videos are like looking at the world though a toilet paper roll. Most of what is important is missed. For many audiences you have to decide between "entertaining them" or "leaving a memory of magic." The first will pay better, the latter impact who you are. So, the question is, "what are trying to accomplish with your approach and effect selection?" There is no right or wrong (hence no criticism). Whatever it is should be clear to the audience.

Happy to discuss why I think today's audiences are very different from those in the 50's and why that impacts performance magic. Drop me an email at ken@eversway.com to explore. If others have interest we can start a new thread.

Very well done. Most moves were fully integrated into the routine, and that made it very enjoyable to watch as a magician as well.
Now, I *really* wish you had some patter, or some music. That'd be a very worthy routine. P! |
