I am curios if there are any people who use routines that might be a pain to reset. Are there effects that you think are so good you don't mind the extra time to reset them and if so what are they?
I think we all know the merits of instant reset so I hope we can skip any debate as to wether people should only use that type of material. |

Hello Dr. Stevens, and welcome to the Café. I have several such routines. When I was still doing walk-around (restaurants, etc.) I would keep these in reserve, and not consider them my "core" material. Practicality is of prime concern for any pro, but there will be times that arise when doing one of those "back pocket" routines is beneficial. It's up to the worker to make his own decisions as to when that might be, since it won't necessarily be the same for everyone. Naming routines is moot. I do my own material.

Thank you Michael
I just thought it would be fun to see what routines that others do. I do Kevin James coin In bottle minus the bottle production at the start. I have changed the routine a bit to gain another small effect that makes it a bit more to set up than the original. I think it's worth the time to set up because it's very magical The biggest drawback is the breaking of the band but that's not awful either |

I do Chicago Surprise. It's not a hilige reset but I don't like to do the set up in front of people. I just set up multiple decks and then reaet them all when I break

3/4s of my personal routines (which are original) are easy to reset, the others are a pain.
I have a close-up version of Orange, Checkers Rice that takes 10 minutes to set. It uses Coins, an Egg and Cat Food. If people are sitting on the edge of their seat or their mouths are slack-jawed it doesn’t matter how long or short the set time is. Conversely, If I do something that doesn’t get a respectable reaction I drop it, even if I spent 5 years making it and I think it’s the best thing ever. I’m paid with money and applause and that’s what I work for.

True but doesn't it suck to learn a hard sleight to end up not using it. Alas we work for the people not the mirror

Kyoki...There have been many sleights that I spend much of my time with and never actually use it. But I see it now as more of an excercise in my dexterity and according to Houdin magic is comprised of three important factors, Dexterity, Dexterity and Dexterity lol

Dexterity is only a very small part of magic. One of my best effects is almost completely self working. That being said I do practice things like the faro just for fun

I've been doing magic for over 50 years. OK, to some of you, that makes me an old fart. To the rest of you, that means I kind of know what I'm talking about... especially considering that magic has not just been a hobby, it has been my career.
That aside, the one thing that I have come to realize is that NOTHING is pointless, when it comes to educating yourself. So, you spend a lot of time learning a sleight that you don't use. This doesn't mean that you never will, nor does it mean that the muscle memory attained practicing this particular sleight won't aid in learning another sleight down the road. More importantly, it creates a sense for discipline that becomes a very good habit to be in. But, let's assume of course that the time spent is not depleting you of time that can and should be spent on more practical endeavors. Obsession isn't always beneficial. A bit of common sense goes a long way here. This is what I was saying in my first post when I mentioned practicality. You do of course, have to do your job. But, as Mr. Eclipse pointed out above, some things are done just for fun. How someone chooses to spend their leisure time is certainly their own business. Learning something new is never a bad choice. I cannot count how many times I have read a magic book, digested the information, and filed it in the memory banks, only to have that information resurface years, and even decades later finding a purpose and a use. The same goes for any form of education. When I was a kid, I did not really enjoy taking certain math classes in school, including geometry and algebra. "Who cares what the area of a triangle is, or what X equals? I'll never use this because I'm going to be a magishun." Well, I am mostly retired as a performer now, but I am building magic for a living. Guess what?? I use geometry and algebra almost EVERY DAY!!! Go figure. All I can figure is that when you're young, you're stupid. More often than not, extra effort pays dividends.

This is why your "old school vs new school" post should be a sticky.

True. It is just that the point is so great and crosses so many areas with the brilliance of it. No kidding. It permeates so much of attitude.
But alas you are correct. Cherry pickers abound.

Work smart. No one really cares about the magic but us. Whatever that's gonna make your life easier will be a wiser career choice.

A question- Is there a version or something that I can do to make the reset quicker?
A example- Geoffrey Durham gypsy thread as it uses mending cotton that come on flat rectangle cardboard. I can have 10 ready to go in my top inside pocket.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

At the end of the day, I'd put practicality / instant reset a priority above other things. Nothing is worst than having to go to a corner and resetting your routines while you are working. There's a time and place for everything, and if its for strolling, I think it matters to have instant reset materials than end up fumbling.

Not sure if this counts as a long reset but Remax Iceolation would be my choice here. Technically, resetting for another performance only needs a trip to the bag to grab more ice, but making each ice block can take 8 hours.
