It's unfortunate to hear the quality of Box 98 isn't up to standard. It looks like a promising concept...

The box is beautiful. I have one. The packaging is weak, no argument, considering the very well-designed kits coming out lately, but the box itself is wonderful. It is plastic. It does have an unusual look. But I can't see why the look can't be used as an advantage..."I saw this odd looking box in an antique store and was told it was a box from the 1920's. Not sure what it was used for, but it is perfect for the experiment I'm about to show you." Or anything similar. Anyway, I love mine. I don't think the boys dug deep enough on this particular item.

I've heard bad things regards the box from someone who's actually handled the box, the funny part is the dealer that actually gave him the box to look at also agreed with him in that it wasn't very good and yet that very same dealer said in the latest and greatest section that it was good.......kind of lets you know that the money comes before his customers satisfaction unless your friends with him that is ;-)

You may be more interested in cosmetics over a good magic effect. Just because some do not like the box, does not mean the effect is not good. The box has nothing to do with the presentation and effect. It is simply a box. No use in complaining, as the boxes are on the market and they will not redesign a new box at this point. Maybe if there is ever a 2nd version, they may consider it. Who knows.
So I guess nobody has anything to say about the effect, just the box. Interesting. |

The box is supposed to look old, and un-interesting. Should have doe a better job advertising that, but he explains it very well in the printed instructions and video.
It is made like the old bake-lite boxes of the past... They actually tested several versions of the box, and found that the version they made that was all exquisite, and pristine looking, got WAY more attention from the spectators. This version, plain, boring. Got way less attention and the specs did not care and just focused on the presentation. This box is SMOOTH to operate. The load is F A S T!!!! He has several loads that are really cool, easy, and fun to do. Dan is a great guy, and he stands behind his product to no end. |

Hi all, I just stumbled across this thread.
I knew going in to the release that this box would be controversial. I knew many wouldn't like the look and it's less than perfect finish, but as has been previously stated, I tested various versions for two years in live performances in order to come up with a design that simply didn't warrant people's attention. It was designed to look like a cheap old trinket box from a second hand store. This offended even my own artistic sensibilities as a perusal of our other releases ought to demonstrate, but, I did it because it improved the effect. Within a week we will have made our 1000th box and the guys that have bought and learned it have raved about it. Some even nominated it for trick of the year. Guys I assure you who I have never met and are not friends, just working pros. Regarding the packaging and the Wizard claim that this is over priced: the packaging is recycled chipboard and it was stamped with a rubber stamp we cut on our laser cutter. In the last several years I have bought numerous effects in beautiful packaging that was worth, and probably cost more than the effect itself. Frankly if that is important to you then you should pass on this. I own nearly every switch box made in the last several years including Mr. Penns. All of them are brilliant in their own way, but I can confidently say as a manufacturer that the lock and hardware alone in Box 98 cost more than the total material cost on all the other boxes I purchased. Let alone that we do not outsource the manufacturing and we stand behind what we make. I realize that not everyone likes the look and finish but we made packaging and finish decisions because of both effectiveness of the magic as well as affordability to you the artists. While this may not please everyone it seems to be an approach that has resonated with quite a few who have actually used the box and discovered the truth of my claims... Used as intended this kills period. Thank you to those who have tried and supported Box98 in spite of some poor reviews from those who never bothered to give it a fair live test. Who knows, maybe the negative reviews will keep it out of the hands of those who don't know a gem from a rock and make it all the more valuable for those of you who care more about a great result. That is the best I can do, and I hope to see more creators adopt the same philosophy. Dan

I'm a bit late in this thread, I purchased one of these. I handed it off to the family to examine the box all they want. Each revealed it within under a minute. I contacted Handcrafted Miracles and told them this. I was told in a reply email
that the box was not constructed to be handed out to the spectators. So I'm assuming who ever created the Promo clip and says the complete opposite is misleading the public. Joe Porper's strong box I feel more comfortable handing out, but certainly not this one. A way around it is just not letting them examine it, but even having them unlock it could turn ugly.
