Can someone help me with the name of this prop. It has two colorful plastic boxes that nest together. They can be shown separately and folded flat. You can see through cut outs so it looks empty. It's a bit like a Square Circle but uses a different principle to conceal the load chamber. I call mine a square square, because I don't know the real name of it. I'd like to buy a backup and I don't know what to search for.

Sounds like you might be describing kuma tubes? Not sure.

It might be Abbott's Tubes of Buddha or someone else's "Buddha Tubes." Here's a photo and a possible source:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie......ry=14014 If you don't like the high price, it's an easy build out of Hardboard and Duct Tape - See Jim Gerrish's "Production Tubes" in his Hardboard Magic Book 1 on my site.

Thanks, Michael and Spellbinder. The tubes, or boxes, in this effect are made of very thin plastic. The outer one is blue and green, the inner one is red and yellow. Each side of each box has two rectangular cutouts so you can see through. There are no graphics on it at all. There is no identification either.

Good idea. My camera needs charging. I'll attach one when it's charged.

Someone must recognize this prop. The reason I'm asking is because I use it in almost every show and I'd like to buy another. Problem is I don't know what it's called.

I stumbled upon this (nearly 5 year) old thread by accident, when researching about Abbott's Tubes of Buddha for a friend.
Although the attached photo is gone, from your description this is the prop you're looking for: http://www.dazzlingmagic.com/products/Fantasta-Folding.html (Also on other magic dealer websites... I just remembered it being on Marty's site.) It's called Fantasta Folding Production, or just Fantasta Folding. Video from YouTube, when I googled the name: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeLOnrKWqfs - Donald

The original Fantasta as sold by Dazzling Magic is made by http://www.jokermagic.com in Hungary.
There is no business like Showbusiness.

Yes, that is them, but D. Robbins makes the same prop they call Sensational See Thru Tubes for $50. It is hove ever, difficultt to find.

I'd rather pay more and get the original prop, made by the original company. But to each their own.

This is not meant to be argumentative.
Donald, I am not a magic Historian, but based on the look and style of the directions, I bet D. Robbins was the originator. The effect is great, but based on the construction, it is not worth $90 to $150. The concept is an old one based on a circle square type of effect that someone is selling now on the Café. There are plenty of knock offs including one that does not fold in acrylic and two that fold in flimsy cardboard. While I do not believe in stealing someone else's effect, I also do not believe in price gouging, There is a great deal of bragging and finger pointing in the magic world, but often, when one follows the path to an effects origin, as I have here, there are so many twists and turns that it is virtually impossible to say that any one person has manufacturing rights. |

My recently published "Totem Tubes" (The Wizards' Journal #34) is based on the same principle and is something you can make yourself with or without power tools. Instead of a generic look, that is not very deceptive, turning the design into Halloween masks (for example) increases the deceptiveness of the props.
