Aloha from Maui, Hawaii. My name is Brenton Keith. I go by Brenton Keith & His Bag O' Tricks. I don't post much in here or spend too much time in the café, but I've been wanting to come in and say that I have been diagnosed with cancer this year. Stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I'm 43. I've been doing High-Energy Comedy & Magic Professionally since I was 14. Currently I am half-way done with chemotherapy. It was really hard in the beginning to figure out whether to keep working or not. Working makes me feel normal. However, that Stage has a lot of Wild Cards, and isn't quite the most stress n' anxiety free place I've come to realize. Magic has always been what I Love, and I never ever thought that performing possibly has had a little bit to do with giving me secret stress. The idea that us performers are always giving giving giving, and wanting our audiences to be happy, and never really slowing down and taking the time to make ourselves happy certainly is interesting to think about. sI've slowed down on gigs during this time, and it has been really nice to reflect. However, I crave to get back into full rhythm, and I'm simply wondering if there are any other Magicians out there have gotten cancer, and that have worked during chemo? One thing I'd like to change is my tag line- I'm now going to be High-Spirited Comedy & Magic.

Hello,
I had it and could not work at all. Chemotherapy for me was truly awful. BUT... I know other people who COULD work. I think you have to let your body ( and consultant ) decide. After all, we are all different. I wish you MUCH good health and energy. I was on chemotherapy for 10 months, thyroid cancer. I was on the toilet constantly, 24 hrs a day, the skin on my feet and hands peeled down to the the last layer, walking was difficult without opoids, like oxycontin. I managed to feed my donkeys and take care of things around the house but venturing out did,nt happen unless I had a doctors appointment. They finally took me off chemo when my kidney function was almost down to zero. Cost of medicine $150,000 plus, look it up, Lenvima.
Luckily I managed to get through all this and now my thyroid cancer is gone and lung cancer in remission (or slow growing, thanks to the magic prayers of your very own, Dick Oslund and Mary Mowder. So, depends on what kind of chemo your on whether your mobile enough. Good luck, pray hard and often and stay funny. The real killer of cancer is giving up and thinking it is a death sentence. It is not, the depression can be if you let it. I watched tons of Marx brothers, 3 stooges and tv comedies. stay happy. love from Texas Spartacus

Hello, Brenton. Like you, I haven't spent much time on the forums. Not that I don't enjoy it - it's just a lack of time. Also like you, I have cancer. It's interesting that I happened upon your post.
First, let me say how sorry I am to hear of the diagnosis. It's the last thing you want to hear. It brings a lot of questions, and some fears. It also has the potential to change your life in good ways, as I'm sure you'll discover. I was diagnosed about 4 years ago, with stage III colon cancer. I've been through three surgeries, radiation, chemo, and even experimental drugs. Over time, the cancer metastasized, and has been stage IV for the past three years. I have been through nearly constant chemo during that time. It's every other week. Until a few months ago, I continued to work in my decidedly non-magical profession of electrical engineering and systems engineering management. For me, it helped to continue working. It was difficult at times, but I found ways. Also, it helped me to maintain an attitude of "everything is normal". That's a great feeling to have, and I think it's therapeutic, besides. Well, this past November, I had to face the fact that all the treatments and the disease itself had begun to make it impossible for me to continue doing my job. So, ten years ahead of schedule, I "retired". I also closed down my online magic store. With a very poor prognosis at this time , I am working to sell off my remaining inventory. But most distressing of all, I am selling off my very nice 500 volume magic book collection. I have to, because my wife won't know what to do with any of that. But on the plus side, I do now have more time to devote to my family and - myself! And that means spending more time on , , , etc. Anyway - I LOVE YOUR ATTITUDE! I think you're on the right track, and that you'll make it just fine. Let me recommend a book, though. You mentioned stress as a trigger for cancer. That's true. But more importantly, there's the inflammation and other cancer incubating conditions that accumulate in our systems. You may have done enough research by now, to realize how important diet is in preventing and even stopping cancer. I have found that a lot of that information is contradictory, and everyone seems to have their own magical key to it. This book puts all of it in perspective, and provides a real roadmap for healing through diet. It's the best I've come across. I urge you and anyone with cancer (or wanting to prevent it) to read "The Metabolic Approach to Cancer", by Dr. Nasha Winters. The information it contains could prove to be a life saver for you! Best of health to you! |

I've had throat cancer twice since 2011. I am cancer free (for the second time) for 3 years or so. I was unfortunate in that I did not recover from many of the side effects and am still disabled (and pretty ill off and on). While in the hospital for 6 months during my first bout, getting more active on the Café was a fantastic therapy. I couldn't afford TV in my room so I rewatched about a billion old magic DVDs and downloads. I also started buying ebooks as they went on sale at L&L epub so often and sites like Lybrary.com and Trickshop.com had great magic books in PDF format at very reasonable prices. I buried myself in online conversations and my close up with cards coins and runner bands.
To this day it continues to help me get by. I am very glad to have such a nice place (most of the time) to hang out online. Carry on and good luck/well wishes to all who suffer (including friends and family).

It really depends on the specific agent utilized for chemotherapy. I had throat cancer and was able to work through chemotherapy and radiotherapy. They gave me cisplatin as the chemotherapy agent. They also added steroids to the mix, however (which resulted in intense insomnia on those nights!). Cisplatin plus steroids enabled me to keep working. I'm now seven years in remission.
My best wishes for health to you!
