Hermetic Press, one of the MAJOR magic publishers, is out of business. Squash Publishing appears to be defunct as does Miracle Factory, both publishers of EXCELLENT books on the craft. So who are the big publishers of magic books now? Kaufman still publishes, that much I know, but so far beyond Kaufman and perhaps Penguin, who absorbed Hermetic, I don't see anything being published lately besides some self publishing from certain creators. Granted, I am just coming back to the magic world, but wow.

It’s sad but less and less people read.
DVD are king in the learning process nowadays. Vanishing Inc is publishing more and more quality books. Josh and Andy are still students of the art. |

And of course, Harry Lorayne is always finding news ideas so as long as he remains in good shape, he will continue to publish books. Thanks Harry !

I'd second the mention of Vanishing Inc. They're the ones I most keep my eye on right now. They've experimented a bit in the past few years with some different formats, from the shorter, almost pamphlet style books like Caleb Wiles High Spots (good book by the way). To some where they will include a dvd that shows some performances of the effects (Confident Deceptions is a good example). And they have some nice, big hardcovers like the Jack Parker or Blomberg books. For Card Dodgery they were offering a bonus, where if you bought the book you could see a download of some of the effects online that was exclusive to buyers of the book. I think they're wise to experiment with some of these combinations, because I don't want the book side of the craft to go away. Anyways, they're my favorite publisher at the moment.

Vanishing Inc, as noted, is very strong.
Kaufman is still publishing and should have more time to focus on books since selling the business side of Genii Magazine. He announced 3 books for this year, though his release schedule seems a bit behind. Hermetic Press was bought by Penguin Magic. They will continue to publish new books as Stephen Minch produces them. Similar to Kaufman, he now gets to focus on making the books while somebody else takes care of selling them. H&R Magic Books continues to publish new works. David Ben's Magicana publishes slowly, but its books are important. The upcoming Johnny Thompson set should be stellar (with an correspondingly astronomical price tag). I hadn't heard that Squash was defunct? Is that true? They released two terrific books just a year ago -- Handsome Jack and Bannon's Mentalissimo. |

Mike Caveney's Magic Words has a nice catalog and is still doing its thing.
Magic Inc. still seems to come out with something now and then and still has a deep catalog of booklets. |

You don't know and you doubt it is true so you were asking? Yet you wrote:

And if you look Tim, the question followed. "So, who are the big publishers of magic books now?"
As to Squash publishing, I was asking because their website would not load, so I had no knowledge of if they were still in business or not. Hence the word "appears". I have since been able to get onto Squash's website, and it does indeed appear to still be publishing, and I am quite thrilled because Squash produces a BEAUTIFUL product. Which is why I said "I doubt it is true", which did come after my first post. Thank you for your help by pointing out the two books they published last year by the way. That led me to try again and I was actually able to get onto their website. As to what led me to a broken link the first time, I have no idea.

While we have sold The Genii Corporation to Randy Pitchford, I am still the editor and my wife is still the art director. That will not change in the foreseeable future.
Despite that, I will publish Ryan Matney's "Spoiler Alert!" with an introduction by John Bannon. It is at the printer and should ship the during the first half of November. And here's a scoop for you: I am republishing Chris Kenner's "Totally Out of Control: MME EDITION" before the end of the year. This new version of the book will contain, in addition to all of the original contents, all four issues of Magic Man Examiner and will be 80 pages larger than the original. The edition will also be limited to 500 copies. After that I will publish "Principia" by Harapan Santoso Ong and coming up shortly after that is my 600-page book (all color) on Theodore DeLand with over 100 tricks and including a deck with many of the required gimmicks. So, we are still in business at Kaufman and Company: this is our 40th anniversary as publishers of the best books on magic. |

L&L has not produced any new material in years. Louis Falanga, very sadly, is in the advanced stages of Parkinson's Disease.
Squash still publishes the occasional book: mostly works by John Bannon these days, though they also published the Handsome Jack book. Gabe Fajuri is kept very busy by his company Potter & Potter auctions. Stephen Minch has produced several books, which are all done and ready to be sent to the printer, but Penguin is waiting to publish them for unknown reasons. One of these is the book on Geoff Latta's coin magic. Mike Caveney has no new books in the pipeline. My book on Ryan Matney, "Spoiler Alert," is out; the limited edition reprint of "Totally Out of Control: SUPREME MME EDITION" which adds the entire file (80 pages) of Magic Man Examiner is going to ship in mid December (currently at the printer). My book on Theodore DeLand (600 pages) is laid out and is waiting for me to find time to write the hundreds of captions for the images. I believe Harapan Ong's "Principia" will be my next publication in early 2018. |

Hello Richard,
Have you other titles for Minch being published in the near future ? And what are your next projects after Deland and Ong books ? We are still waiting for the end of Jennings trilogy… |

Richard,
Are you still planning to re-release Greater Magic soon? And is it true you have the rights to Professional Card Magic and will be bringing that back into print? |
Richard Kaufman Inner circle 2532 Posts |
I do own the copyright to Cliff Green's "Professional Card Magic" and will be rewriting it.
And I am still planning to do a new release of Greater Magic with added material. |

Any timelines on that?
