I just received the brand new Perfect Time III from Viking Manufacturing. In one word, it's "Perfect!" This is a HIGH quality piece of work. George Robinson has obviously taken the time and care to produce a product that eliminates the quirks and problems found in the earlier versions and the cheap rip-off models.
Effect: You take a very nice watch off your wrist and let someone hold it or look at it. The watch displays the current time. You can even have them pull out the crown and play with the time setting if you like. You take it and holding the watch face away from them, you say you are setting the watch to a predicted time. After setting it, you never touch the body of the watch again. You hold it only by the end of the strap. You now ask the spectator to first call out any hour. Then you ask the person to call out any minute which together makes a time of day. After doing so, you slowly turn the watch around, which you have been holding at arm's length between your thumb and fingertip and only at the end of the strap, never touching the body of the watch. The face of the watch is set to their called out time! Review: First of all, this watch is SOLID. It is a well-made timepiece that sports the name "Christian Kevin (CK), Swiss Made" on the face. It looks like an expensive designer watch. No funny names with the word "Trix" in it. You can hand out this watch and feel confident that it will impart a feeling of quality to anyone holding it. Now, this is a fully functional watch that really keeps the time. You can have the spectator pull out the stem and set the watch if they like or just let them watch you move the hands. This is a nice touch. As for the working, no more tilting or awkward handling!! You just hold the watch with your fingertip and thumb, arm outstretched. No movement of the watch is necessary anymore. No magnets, nothing added or taken away. Yet you have full visual control... AND TACTILE FEEDBACK as the work is done! You can even fine-tune the position if you're off a bit. The WORST CASE scenario - You can get to where you want to go within 70 seconds which is a piece of cake using a casual, normal patter. Bottom line. This watch is worth every penny. It comes in several stylings such as gold-tone or stainless, white or black face, brown or black strap. Yes it comes in a luxurious box too. To me that's not so important but it IS a nice touch. If you are currently doing this or have been thinking about doing this but didn't want to get something poorly made, your wait is over. Kudos to Viking for making such a quality product available! Finally! :) |

$349.95 PBG did you say it cycles in 70 seconds? That would be a big improvement over the original.

Yes Myster, that is correct. 70 seconds is the longest it can take in a worst case scenario. Typically the work is done in a fraction of that time. And yes, you are correct again in that this is a HUGE improvement over anything similar that I have seen out there.
The time has truly arrived for this effect! (Pun intended) :) |

Any issues using the watch as your day-to-day time piece? (that is, will it hold up? Keeps normal time?)

In fact, it doesn't have a lap counter, no dual time zone, no alarms, no stop watch, no phases of the moon, no underwater lapse time to keep track of your air supply, no calculator, no PDA functions, nor anything else you may find in other watches. It just accurately tells the TIME. BUT... It does let you perform one HECK of a killer time prediction. Quote:

Wonderful -- always on the lookout for "magic/mentalism anytime/anywhere" type effects and this fits the bill perfectly. Had been holding out on the purchase until they came out with this version as I heard it was on the way....
Thanks for the heads up on its release and the review! |

There are 4 images that you can enlarge on the Viking Magic website to view the time-piece. The image on the left shows a watch with Roman Numerals, and the other 3 show a different watch. Which one is it? I like the Roman Numeral version best.

I thought that was an old version and the other three were the New version

Ah, that makes sense, cheers. The watch looks better with Roman Numerals though.

Thanks for the post PalmBeachGuy. I think the inventors will expect this question - what happens if the mechanism breaks down? This comes with a warranty of some sort? I don't suppose anyone can fix it

Wow...thanks so much for the condescension. As someone who owns the Time Machine, I had just hoped that this far more expensive gimmicked watch actually looked like an ordinary timepiece. A watch without a second hand draws heat when used in an effect like this. I wouldn't have thought so prior to owning mine, but it does. It just doesn't look right. Mike, I was trying to be funny in that message. But see? That's the thing about humor. Especially when you are typing it which eliminates the tonal inflections and facial expressions. Inevitably someone gets bent out of shape. Even when using the smiley emoticon like I did. Ah well. Sorry about that, Mike. As for your "point," I say NO WAY. I maintain that this watch looks TOTALLY normal. It looks like a quality designer watch. Your saying that a watch draws heat because it lacks a second hand is like saying that a watch draws heat because it doesn't have a date window. Come on! There are countless watches out there that do not have second hands nor date windows. And because there ARE countless styles of watches that sport all kinds of shapes, sizes, colors and features, what's a "normal" watch supposed to look like anymore? I'm inclined to believe that you are simply letting your own personal taste in how a watch should appear interfere with your performance. NO ONE has ever said to me "Hey, where is the second hand? This must be a trick watch." So it must be something you are doing, possibly they are picking up on your own doubts about the lack of a second hand? I don't know. I haven't seen your performance. I am convinced that the strength of an impact made depends very much on ones presentation. I've seen magi do cups and balls with $500+ silver sets, and others do it with dixie cups. Is one better than the other? I don't think so. I'm sure you will find performers who will say that using one or the other will draw suspicion. But the bottom line is that YOU have to feel good about it. If a watch not having a sweep second hand makes you feel uncomfortable, then so be it. Don't use it. But don't go around saying that this watch looks like it is gimmicked and will be ineffective. I can assure you that it is VERY effective. Compared to the other models, IN MY OPINION (there, I said it), the Perfect Time III watch is VASTLY superior in appearance as well as in its operation to any of the other models out there, especially your awkward tilting Time Machine version. I guess you could say that was MY point, Mike. |

I have always been conscious of the fact that none of these watches has ever had a sweeping hand, in fact that is the only reason I have never purchased one in the past. However, when I read your post P.B.G, I had a scan around my local jewellers and yes, there are lots of expensive looking watches that do indeed NOT have sweeping hands, something I had never noticed before. The one thing that did make me laugh though is when that so called sports version came out without a sweeping hand, now that did look suspicious. At least the high price (although worth it) will stop every tom dick and harry buying one.

...especially your awkward tilting Time Machine version. I guess you could say that was MY point, Mike. That "awkward tilting" watch was recommended here on the Café by none other than Larry Becker, if memory serves me. But what does he know, eh? I have no problems with the mechanism in the Time Machine. The mercury switch works perfectly reliably for me. No one has ever called me on the move. And the watch is actually nice-looking. Still, about a quarter of those I've performed this for want to know why my watch has no second hand. (The other 75% are flabbergasted by the effect, FWIW, but that's just not good enough.) --Mike P.S. Like Pegasus, I too did a scan of local jewelry stores and watchmakers. I can count the number of watches I found without sweep second hands on one hand, with fingers to spare. |
